After a series of stops and starts, Tesla Inc. has announced that it has started series production of the Cybertruck. The electric pick-up is being produced at Tesla’s Gigafactory in Texas and is on track to achieve its revised production target. Tesla founder Elon Musk had previously claimed a 2021 launch date during the Cybertruck’s unveiling back in 2019.
Looking at the official image released by Tesla, the production-spec Cybertruck is quite similar to the prototype. The angular and futuristic-looking exterior is supposedly made from “ultra-hard 30X cold-rolled stainless steel”. The company also claims that the Cybertruck’s body can withstand attacks from 9mm bullets.
The pick-up truck’s rear load bay is 6.5 feet long offering a raisable cover. The manufacturer claims over 2,800 litres of lockable storage space which includes the covered load bay, the sail pillars, and the frunk. It also features adaptive air suspension with changeable ride height.
Moving inside, the four-wheeler is believed to be able to accommodate up to 6 adults while its minimalistic interior is dominated by a 17-inch portrait-oriented infotainment system.
The American automaker will offer the Cybertruck with three powertrain options featuring one, two, or three electric motors. While its battery pack sizes are yet to be revealed, the single-motor RWD variant has a claimed range of 402 km and can tow up to 3,400 kgs. The dual motor trim has the same claimed range but has increased towing capability, now rated at 4,500 kgs.
As for the top-end variant, it will employ a new tri-motor Plaid EV powertrain that has a claimed range of 804 km and a towing capacity of 6,350 kgs. All three trims have the same payload capacity of 1,360 kgs.
The upcoming Cybertruck can be booked via Tesla’s official website for a refundable deposit of $100 or around Rs 8,000. However, there is no guarantee that these reservations will be converted into sales. In terms of pricing, the base trim comes in at $39,900 (Rs 32.72 lakh) while the mid-variant is priced at $49,900 (Rs 32.72 lakh). The flagship trim will set you back by $69,900 (Rs 57.32 lakh).
