Launching its first mid-size SUV in the Indian market, Toyota Kirloskar Motor (TKM) today introduced a new powertrain option in the segment. Starting at Rs 15.11 lakh (ex-showroom), the Toyota Urban Cruiser Hyryder is currently available only in strong hybrid and top-of-the-line Neo Drive variant, while the price announcement of the lower variants will be made at a later date.

The top-of-the-line Neo Drive V AT 2WD trim is priced at Rs 17.09 lakh (ex-showroom), while the top-spec strong hybrid V eDrive 2WD will set you back by Rs 18.99 lakh (ex-showroom). The strong hybrid G and S eDrive 2WD trims are priced at Rs 17.49 lakh and Rs 15.11 lakh (ex-showroom) respectively. Toyota is charging a premium of Rs. 1.9 lakh for the top-spec strong hybrid variant over the subsequent mild hybrid version.

In terms of design, the Hyryder sports a Unique Crystal Acrylic upper grille, LED projector headlamp and twin LED DRLs paired with 17-inch alloy wheels to the sides. Inside the cabin, the mid-size SUV is loaded with features like a 9-inch free-standing infotainment unit, HUD, wireless charging, ambient lights, a large panoramic sunroof and ventilated front seats amongst others.

Available with the choice of two petrol engine options, the first is a 1.5-litre K-Series engine with a mild-hybrid system capable of producing 100bhp and 135 Nm of peak torque. The more expensive option is the 1.5 litre Atkinson cycle engine aired to a strong hybrid system, belting out a combined power output of 115 bhp. While the self-charging hybrid is mated to an e-CVT, the smart hybrid will come with an option for a 5-speed manual or a 6-speed automatic with paddle shifters. The SUV also gets an AWD as an option. The strong hybrid version of the Hyryder returns a class-leading fuel efficiency of 27.97 kmpl.
The Toyota Urban Cruiser Hyryder rivals the likes of Kia Seltos, Hyundai Creta, MG Astor, Volkswagen Taigun, Skoda Kushaq and the upcoming Maruti Suzuki Grand Vitara in its segment.
