The competition in India’s hotly contested mid-size SUV segment, currently led by the Hyundai Creta, is set to get even more intense by next year. Within the next twelve months, four brand-new models are expected to arrive, offering buyers more features, better technology, and fresh designs.
From a budget-friendly hybrid SUV to an iconic nameplate making a comeback, the upcoming launches are set to shake up the mid-size SUV space. Here’s a closer look at each contender.
Maruti Suzuki will launch the Escudo Hybrid in India on September 3, 2025. Positioned below the Grand Vitara, it aims to offer modern tech, strong fuel efficiency, and competitive pricing.
Unlike the Grand Vitara, which is sold via NEXA outlets, the Escudo will be retailed through Maruti’s Arena dealerships, giving it access to small towns and rural markets.
It will share its 1.5-litre mild-hybrid and 1.5-litre strong-hybrid petrol engines with the Grand Vitara. The strong-hybrid produces 115 bhp and promises excellent fuel efficiency. A CNG option is also likely, along with manual and automatic gearboxes.
Feature Highlights:
- 9-inch touchscreen with wireless Apple CarPlay & Android Auto
- Six airbags as standard
- Wireless charger
- Semi-digital instrument cluster
- Multiple drive modes
- Possible Level-2 ADAS & Dolby Atmos audio on top trims
The Escudo is expected to be slightly longer than the Grand Vitara, offering more cabin space and boot capacity. Pricing is likely between Rs 11–16 lakh (ex-showroom).
The Tata Sierra is making a comeback after two decades, now as a five-door SUV. It will debut two all-new 1.5-litre petrol engines – one naturally aspirated and one turbocharged direct injection.
Unique Features:
- Passenger-side touchscreen (a Tata first)
- All-electric Sierra.ev launching before the ICE version
- Premium design with modern tech
Tata’s decision to launch the electric version first signals a strong EV push, with the ICE model derived from the EV platform.
The next-gen Kia Seltos is set to grow bigger, smarter, and more premium. Globally the brand’s second best-selling SUV, it will enter India in early 2026.
Key Changes:
- Around 100 mm longer than current model (approx. 4.5m)
- More second-row space & larger boot
- Distinct designs for standard and X-Line versions
- Possible 30-inch Trinity display, ventilated seats, sliding/reclining rear seats
A new hybrid version will join the lineup, based on a 1.5-litre petrol engine paired with an electric motor. Other engines will include 1.5L NA petrol, 1.5L turbo petrol, and 1.5L diesel with multiple transmission choices.
The Renault Duster is returning in its third generation with a bold, modern design while retaining its rugged appeal. Built on the CMF-B LS platform, it will offer:
1.0L turbo petrol
1.3L turbo petrol
Hybrid version (within a year of launch) - Renault’s first electrified SUV in India
The new Duster will aim to revive the nameplate’s reputation for durability and off-road-friendly performance.
