Hyundai is all set to bring its global luxury brand, Genesis, to the Indian market. The confirmation came through Hyundai’s FY 2024–25 Annual Report, as the company eyes the country’s rapidly growing premium car segment.
Genesis will operate as an independent luxury brand, separate from Hyundai’s mainstream car lineup. The goal is to create a premium customer experience through digital-first sales, curated events, and a fresh retail strategy, moving away from traditional dealerships.
In the initial phase, Hyundai plans to introduce Genesis models as Completely Built Units (CBUs). The G80 luxury sedan and GV80 premium SUV are expected to be among the first to arrive. These vehicles are popular global models and will help establish the brand’s identity in India.
Later, Hyundai may locally assemble some Genesis models at its Sriperumbudur plant near Chennai to make them more affordable and competitive in pricing.
Hyundai is not only looking at India as a sales market but also sees potential in using the country as a manufacturing and export base for Genesis vehicles. The focus would be on other right-hand-drive markets, enhancing India’s role in Hyundai’s global operations.
Although Hyundai has not announced an exact launch date yet, market studies, homologation processes, and retail strategy planning are already underway. The company is preparing for a digital and customer-first launch experience.
Hyundai’s COO, Tarun Garg, recently reiterated the company’s commitment to launching Genesis in India. The brand has been under evaluation since 2019, and internal teams are now actively working on its go-to-market strategy.
While Genesis offers a range of sedans globally, Hyundai is expected to focus more on SUVs for the Indian market. The GV80 Coupe has already been trademarked in India, indicating it could be among the launch models.
Other SUVs like the GV70 and GV60 EV are also being considered. The GV70 is available in an electric version in some countries, which may appeal to Indian buyers looking for luxury EV options.
The GV80, if launched first, will compete directly with established rivals like the Mercedes-Benz GLE, BMW X5, and Audi Q7 in the midsize luxury SUV segment.
India’s luxury car segment, though small at just over 1% of total car sales, is growing faster than the overall market. In FY2025, luxury cars grew by 3.3%, compared to the overall industry growth of 2%. This upward trend makes it a good time for Genesis to enter the market.
