Is Hyundai Working on a New 4WD SUV for India?

Hyundai Boulder has been patented in India, but an India launch is not confirmed. The rugged SUV could get body-on-frame construction, 4WD and a differential lock. Petrol and electric powertrains could be offered in the production version.

Hyundai could be preparing a new rugged SUV for the Indian market. The company’s Boulder concept has now been patented in India, giving a fresh indication that the off-road-focused SUV could be considered for our market.

Hyundai had globally previewed the Boulder concept in April. The concept featured a boxy shape, large off-road tyres and a rugged design, making it very different from Hyundai’s current SUV line-up. However, Hyundai has not confirmed an India launch yet.

Hyundai Boulder gets a rugged design

The Indian patent design remains close to the Boulder concept, although there are some changes to the exterior. The front gets a revised bumper and skid plate housing, while the side profile has also been slightly changed. A roof-mounted carrier is visible in the patented design.

Large off-road tyres, flared wheel arches, chunky bumpers and rugged skid plates give the SUV a proper off-road look. The concept also had a boxy body and a high ground clearance, suggesting that Hyundai wants the Boulder to focus more on adventure and rough-road driving than its existing SUVs.

Could it get 4WD?

Hyundai has not revealed the final mechanical package of the Boulder. However, reports suggest that the SUV could use a body-on-frame architecture, which would make it Hyundai's first model of this type.

An AWD or 4WD system is also expected, along with a differential lock for better traction on difficult surfaces. The patented design appears to use an independent suspension setup. More details about the suspension, drivetrain and off-road hardware are expected when Hyundai moves closer to revealing the production version.

EV and petrol power could be offered

The Boulder is also expected to support different powertrain options. An electric version is reportedly part of the plan, while an internal-combustion engine could also be offered. This would allow Hyundai to sell the SUV with different powertrains depending on the market. There are currently no confirmed details about the engine, battery capacity, power output or driving range.

Could it rival Thar and Jimny?

If Hyundai brings the Boulder to India, it could enter a growing lifestyle and off-road SUV segment. The SUV's rugged design, possible body-on-frame construction, 4WD system and differential lock could put it in the same broad space as models such as the Mahindra Thar and Maruti Suzuki Jimny. However, the final positioning and pricing will depend on the production version.

India launch not confirmed yet

The Indian patent is an interesting development, but it does not confirm that the Boulder will be launched here. Hyundai is yet to announce a production version or an India launch timeline.

For now, the Boulder remains a concept that could eventually become Hyundai's first serious off-road SUV. If the company does bring it to India, the model could add a completely new type of SUV to Hyundai's local portfolio.
