New Hyundai 7-seater hybrid SUV to rival XUV 7XO and Safari. It could be based on the China-spec Tucson LWB, featuring a hybrid powertrain.
Hyundai has an ambitious product strategy for the Indian market. The South Korean automaker has announced plans to launch 26 new models by 2030 across ICE (internal combustion engine), electric vehicle (EV) and hybrid segments. Hyundai’s first hybrid offering in India will be the next-generation Creta, which is expected to arrive early next year. Following the launch of the all-new Hyundai Creta, the carmaker will introduce a premium three-row hybrid SUV.
Codenamed Ni1i, the new Hyundai 7-seater SUV will be positioned against the Mahindra XUV700, Tata Safari and MG Hector Plus along with the upcoming three-row versions of the Maruti Grand Vitara, Renault Duster, Nissan Tekton and Toyota Urban Cruiser Hyryder. Hyundai’s Talegaon manufacturing plant will serve as production hub for the upcoming Hyundai Ni1i.
Product details are not available at the moment. According to reports, the upcoming Hyundai three-row SUV could be based on the long wheelbase Hyundai Tucson sold in China. The China-spec Tucson LWBB measures 4,670mm in length, 1,865mm in width and 1,690mm in height with a wheelbase of 2,755mm.
Globally, the Tucson SUV is offered with a 1.6L petrol hybrid powertrain. The setup combines a 1.6L T-GDI, 4-cylinder petrol engine, a permanent magnet synchronous motor and a 1.49kWh lithium-ion polymer battery.
The electric motor pushes out a maximum power of 59 bhp and 264 Nm of torque. The combined power and torque outputs of the petrol hybrid powertrain stand at 230 bhp and 350 Nm, respectively. The global-spec Tucson does 0 to 100kmph sprints in 8.0 seconds and offers a top speed of 190kmph. It offers a claimed fuel efficiency of 18kmpl – 20kmpl (WLTP, depending on driving conditions).
There is also speculations that Hyundai could use a similar hybrid setup with its existing 1.5L naturally aspirated petrol engine. This powertrain is also expected to debut in the next-generation Creta. Hyundai is planning to manufacture nearly 50,000 units of the new 7-seater SUV annually. However, there is no clarity yet on the proportion of hybrid variants within this production target.
