Amid reports of the Thar Armada five-door launching in August, Mahindra’s new offroader will come with key features over the smaller Thar, some even segment-firsts. These may include a larger touchscreen and panoramic sunroof, while some security feature additions would make it eligible for sale abroad. Keep reading to find out whether the new Thar is a worthy upgrade.

Underpinned by Scorpio N’s ladder on frame architecture, the Thar five-door will feature a longer and wider body to accommodate up to seven passengers comfortably. The incumbent Thar cleverly sits just under four metres at 3,985 mm and seats four people at maximum capacity. Futher, the Penta-link suspension setup should handling and ride comfort.
Test mules doing rounds on social media have revealed cameras and sensors around the nearing-launch Thar’s perimeter. To note, Level 2 ADAS will be a segment-first feature too as the Maruti Suzuki Jimny and Force Gurkha SUVs haven’t featured any level of autonomy yet. This may allow the homegrown brand to sell it in international markets like Australia.
Mahindra has upped the cabin experience starting with a 10.25-inch touchscreen and an instrument cluster of similar size. Reportedly, the units are borrowed from Mahindra’s XUV 700, which also gets AdrenoX connectivity besides wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Due to its longer wheelbase, it is expected to house a panoramic sunroof, likely in the range-topping variant.
At 19 inches, the size of Thar’s wheels has also gone up by an inch. Starting trims to get plain alloy wheels but diamond-cut ones can be offered with higher Thar variants. As the newer Thars don’t don a variant badge, differentiation will be easier on this basis.
While the entire engine lineup is expected to be carried over from the three-door, its 2-litre petrol and 2.2-litre diesel engines will be available in a higher state of power like the Scorpio N. The latter’s petrol and diesel mills churn out 200 bhp and 172 bhp with an identical torque output of 370 Nm when paired to a six-speed manual gearbox.
