Maruti Suzuki Ciaz will soon bid farewell to the Indian market. As per a fresh media report, this midsize sedan will be discontinued by April 2025 due to its poor sales and increasing market demand for SUVs. However, there is no official word confirmation from the carmaker yet. Let’s take a look at the journey of the Maruti Ciaz in India.
Maruti Suzuki Ciaz is the oldest model in the premium midsize sedan segment, which was first introduced in India in late 2014. It came as a replacement for the SX4, and compete against the Hyundai Verna, Honda City, Skoda Rapid and Volkswagen Vento. Initially, it was introduced with the 1.4L K-Series petrol and 1.3L DDiS diesel engines, delivering power worth 91 bhp with 130 Nm and 89 bhp with 200 Nm, respectively. A 5-speed manual gearbox was standard, while a 4-speed automatic transmission was available exclusively with the petrol engine.
In 2018, the Ciaz received its first midlife update with the introduction of a new 1.5L petrol engine boosted with the SHVS mild hybrid system. This setup was good enough for 103bhp and 138Nm. This engine was updated to meet the BS6 emission standards in 2020. The Maruti Ciaz lineup received a minor safety update and tweaks in 2021, followed by the new dual-tone colour options and minimal interior updates in 2023.
In the first year of its arrival, the Maruti Ciaz enjoyed immense popularity, which was further boosted with the introduction of the Maruti Suzuki Nexa dealership network in 2017. However, in 2019-2020, the carmaker dropped the Fiat-sourced 1.3L DDiS diesel engine from the sedan lineup due to the implementation of the BS6 emission norms, which significantly impacted its sales.
The rising demand for compact SUVs further contributed to its sales. While all its rivals Honda City, Hyundai Verna, Skoda Slavia and Volkswagen Virtus have been receiving regular updates, the Ciaz has not undergone any major changes in recent years.
