Maruti Suzuki has already created a buzz with the recent launch of its Victoris SUV, the brand’s most technologically advanced vehicle yet. While the Victoris has been made available with multiple powertrain options, including petrol, hybrid, and CNG, there’s more in store. The company is gearing up to showcase an exciting new variant, the Bio Gas (CBG) version of the Victoris SUV.
Let’s take a closer look at what makes this new variant exciting.
The Victoris SUV launched in India with three distinct powertrain options - a 1.5L naturally aspirated petrol engine, a bi-fuel CNG version, and a Toyota-sourced petrol-electric hybrid system. Now, Maruti Suzuki is adding a fourth option, a Bio Gas (CBG) variant of the Victoris SUV.
This upcoming Bio Gas version will be unveiled at the 2025 Japan Mobility Show and is set to create significant interest. The CBG-powered Victoris will be based on the existing CNG variant but will come with specific modifications to ensure cleaner combustion of Bio Gas.
Maruti Victoris Bio Gas (CBG) variant will feature the same 1.5L K15 naturally aspirated petrol engine used in the CNG model, but it will be modified to run efficiently on Compressed Bio Gas (CBG). The SUV will include an under-body storage tank designed to accommodate CBG, which is a more eco-friendly fuel compared to traditional CNG.
While the CBG fuel system is similar to CNG, it offers a significant advantage: CBG is a renewable fuel produced from the methane gas released during the decay of organic materials. Unlike CNG, which is a non-renewable fossil fuel, CBG can be produced continuously and sustainably, making it a cleaner alternative.
While both CNG and CBG are gases used in internal combustion engines, they differ significantly in their sources. CNG is a non-renewable resource, formed over millions of years from fossilized organic matter. CBG, on the other hand, is a renewable fuel produced from agricultural waste, animal manure, and municipal solid waste. CBG can be created relatively quickly, unlike CNG, which is finite and takes millions of years to form.
By using CBG instead of CNG, vehicles like the Victoris can significantly reduce their carbon footprint. Moreover, Bio Gas production can help solve environmental challenges such as agricultural residue burning and waste management, all while creating jobs in the process.
Maruti Victoris Bio Gas (CBG) variant is set to be showcased at the 2025 Japan Mobility Show but is unlikely to be launched as a standalone product in India in the immediate future. Currently, the CBG variant will be presented as a prototype, and there’s no confirmed timeline for its commercial release.
