Maruti Suzuki preparing a new entry-level electric vehicle It will be based on the dedicated EV platform The small EV to rival Tata Tiago EV
We informed you earlier that Maruti Suzuki will expand its electric vehicle range to 4 models by 2030. The company is developing an all-new 7-seater electric MPV, codenamed YMC, and an all-new entry-level electric hatchback. Maruti Suzuki has confirmed that it is preparing a small electric vehicle for the Indian market. However, the company will wait for a wider charging network before expanding beyond its first EV, the e Vitara.
Speaking at its annual general meeting, Maruti Suzuki’s MD and CEO Hisashi Takeuchi said that smaller electric models would be introduced once Maruti’s charging infrastructure is sufficiently developed across the country. Maruti Suzuki entered the India’s electric passenger vehicle market earlier this year with the e Vitara, which is produced at the company’s Hansalpur plant in Gujarat.
MSIL is currently focusing on providing dependable charging infrastructure. The company is building that network through partnership with 13 charge-point operators and has already established more than 2,000 exclusive charging points across over 1,100 cities. Maruti is targeting more than 100,000 charging points by the end of the decade.
It is also reported that the Maruti Suzuki small electric vehicle will be sold through Maruti’s ARENA dealership network. The electric model is expected to be based on a dedicated EV platform. This will allow the company to optimise battery placement, cabin space and other components specifically around an electric powertrain. The small EV will come with high localisation levels, and is expected to be priced under Rs 10 lakh.
The upcoming Maruti Suzuki affordable EV will focus on everyday urban commute, and is expected to offer a range of around 250-300km on a single charge. It will directly rival the Tata Tiago EV.
Suzuki has recently revealed the e Sky electric hatchback in the home market. The electric hatchback measures 3395mm in length, and has a wheelbase of 2460mm. It is packed with a 26 kWh battery pack, and offers a claimed range of up to 310 km.
