Tata Motors has announced an all-new engine for its upcoming Coupe-SUV, the Curvv, called the 'Hyperion.' This engine comes in this avatar for the first time under the hood of a Curvv and could find itself on more Tata cars very soon.
The new engine is a 1.2-litre turbocharged three-cylinder unit. It produces 125 horsepower and 225Nm of torque. That's an increase of 5 horsepower and 55Nm of torque over the engine in the Tata Nexon. This excess will help the Curvv carry its larger size.
This is an all-aluminum engine, featuring technologies like variable valve timing and a variable oil pump. Some of the other notable inclusions will be an integrated manifold exhaust and a water-cooled turbocharger, which Tata claims will help the performance of the engine and quicken acceleration at lower revs.
The Tata Curvv will also come with a 1.2-litre turbo-petrol engine for 120bhp and 170Nm of torque. It will be mated to either a 6-speed manual or a 7-speed dual-clutch transmission. It will also be offered with a 1.5-litre diesel powertrain, which will produce 113.42bhp and 260Nm of torque, mated with a 6-speed manual gearbox. Interestingly, the Curvv diesel will also receive a dual-clutch automatic gearbox. Curvv will also come with a pure electric variant, which is likely to be packed with a 55kWh battery and dual-motor setup. It can go up to 500km on a single charge.
While this current engine is not known for smoothness or high performance, Tata promises the new Hyperion engine will be more refined and efficient. We will have to wait to see how it performs on the road.
