Tata Sumo Comeback Looks Possible – Here's Why

Tata Sumo revival is once again being discussed. The upcoming Scarlet SUV could revive the iconic name. Tata Motors has not officially confirmed the comeback.

Tata Sumo was one of the most popular SUVs in India before it was discontinued in 2019. Even years after its exit, the name continues to be remembered by SUV enthusiasts. Now, fresh reports suggest that the Sumo could make a comeback, although in a very different form. While Tata Motors has not confirmed any such plan, there are a few reasons why the return of the Sumo now looks possible.

Tata Has Already Brought Back the Sierra

One of the biggest reasons behind the speculation is Tata's decision to revive the Tata Sierra. The iconic SUV nameplate has returned after years of absence and is set to launch in a modern avatar. This shows that Tata is open to bringing back well-known names from its past. If the Sierra can return, many believe the Sumo could also follow the same path.

A New Rugged SUV Is Under Development

Tata Motors is working on a new compact SUV, internally known as Scarlet. It is expected to be positioned between the Tata Nexon and the upcoming Tata Sierra. The SUV is likely to feature a boxy design, upright stance and high ground clearance. These characteristics are similar to what made the original Sumo popular, making it a suitable model for a possible Sumo revival.

It Could Be Very Different From the Old Sumo

If Tata decides to use the Sumo name again, the new model is expected to be quite different from its predecessor. Instead of a ladder-frame chassis, it is likely to use a modern monocoque platform. This would improve ride comfort, handling and fuel efficiency while still offering rugged SUV styling for everyday use.

Petrol and EV Versions Could Be Offered

Tata has been developing most of its new products with both ICE and electric versions in mind. The upcoming Scarlet SUV is also expected to follow the same strategy. If launched, the electric version could even get an all-wheel-drive setup using dual electric motors, although Tata has not officially shared these details.

Nothing Official Yet

At present, Tata Motors has not announced the return of the Sumo, and there is no confirmed launch timeline. However, with the Sierra revival already confirmed, a new rugged compact SUV under development and Tata planning 10 new models by March 2031, the possibility of bringing back the Sumo name cannot be ruled out. If the company decides to move ahead, the new Sumo could return as a premium compact SUV designed for modern Indian roads rather than as a direct replacement for the original model.
