It will be built on a new flexible platform, not body-on-frame Debut could happen with a petrol-hybrid engine, diesel is unlikely The design will have Land Cruiser-inspired rugged looks Toyota may call it Land Cruiser FJ
Toyota is planning to introduce a new SUV that will slot between the Urban Cruiser Hyryder and the Fortuner, Autocar reported. This ‘mini Fortuner’ will directly compete with Mahindra’s popular off-roaders, the Scorpio and Thar Roxx. However, unlike the Fortuner’s body-on-frame construction, the new SUV will be built on an all-new monocoque platform (earlier thought to be TNGA). This shift in platform will allow it to offer better on-road comfort, something that gets compromised in off-road vehicles. Toyota plans to begin production of the SUV at its new Chhatrapati Sambhaji Nagar (Aurangabad) plant by 2027.

The upcoming SUV is expected to inherit the rugged design elements of the Fortuner but with a more compact and modern look. It will feature high ground clearance, squared-off wheel arches, and a bold, muscular stance. Toyota is reportedly designing the SUV with a boxy silhouette similar to the Land Cruiser, which would include off-road styling bits such as a spare tyre mounted on the tailgate and a flat roof.
The vehicle is expected to have a length of around 4,410 mm, a width of 1,855 mm and a height of 1,870 mm, with a wheelbase of approximately 2,580 mm. These dimensions place it in a size category that offers the toughness of an off-roader with the agility needed for city driving.
Under the hood, the SUV is expected to feature a petrol-hybrid engine. The likely powertrain is the 2-litre, four-cylinder petrol engine paired with a strong hybrid system, similar to the one found in the Toyota Innova Hycross. This setup would offer a balance between power and fuel efficiency, making it ideal for both city commutes and off-road trips. Toyota is also considering an all-electric variant in the future, aligning with its global push towards greener technologies.
While a diesel variant may not be available in most markets, in some regions, Toyota could launch a 2.8-litre turbo diesel engine option. This engine could be paired with a micro-hybrid system, which would include a belt-driven electric motor, a small lithium-ion battery and a converter to boost fuel efficiency and performance. This setup could deliver a combined power output of 204bhp and 499Nm of torque, ensuring strong performance on both highways and rough terrains.
The new Toyota SUV is expected to come loaded with features including a touchscreen infotainment system with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay support. Dual-zone automatic climate control, multiple airbags and traction control are expected to be standard.
Like its larger sibling, the mini Fortuner will likely be offered in both two-wheel drive and four-wheel drive configurations. The 4x4 variant will be equipped with hill descent control, an electronic locking rear differential and multi-terrain modes.
With the current Fortuner’s price surpassing Rs 60 lakh (on-road) in several cities across India, Toyota’s upcoming SUV aims to fill the gap for buyers seeking a tough, reliable off-roader at a more affordable price point. Positioned between the Urban Cruiser Hyryder and the Fortuner, this new model is expected to attract customers looking for Toyota’s renowned reliability, off-road capability, and premium features without the hefty price tag.
