It is no secret that Toyota is working on the next generation Fortuner SUV, which will receive radical changes. However, this model won't be launched before the end of 2025 or 2026. Meanwhile, Toyota has launched a mild hybrid version of the Fortuner SUV in South Africa. It shares the mild hybrid tech with the Hilux MHEV, which is on sale in select international markets. The Toyota Fortuner MHEV is also expected to be launched in other markets.
The Toyota Fortuner MHEV is powered by the same 2.8-litre 4-cylinder turbo diesel engine that powers the Indian-spec model. However, it is coupled with a 48V mild-hybrid system that offers an additional power and torque of 16hp and 42Nm, respectively. This engine is capable of producing 201hp of maximum power and 500Nm of torque. Both 2WD and 4WD variants are on offer. The powertrain is coupled to a 6-speed automatic gearbox.
The new Fortuner MHEV is claimed to be 5 percent more fuel efficient than the standard variant. It offers a certified fuel economy of 14kmpl.
The mild-hybrid version of the Fortuner comes with a new engine idle start-stop system, which is claimed to offer an improved throttle response and a smooth engine restart. Adding to it, driving this big SUV in bumper-to-bumper traffic will become easier.
The new Fortuner hybrid also comes with an upgraded safety kit with addition of a 360 degree camera and Toyota Safety Sense ADAS suite. The ADAS system offers multiple safety features such as automatic emergency braking, blind spot monitoring, adaptive cruise control, lane assist, high-beam assist and forward collision warning.
