Toyota will revive two of its iconic sports cars: the MR2 and the Celica. With the revival of the Toyota Supra and Toyota 86, the automaker is set to introduce more sports cars into its lineup. The new models will be part of Toyota's performance lineup alongside the GR Yaris and the GR Supra. Besides the MR2 and Celica, Toyota is also developing a flagship car for Lexus to replace the Lexus LFA supercar.
The MR2 and Celica are both iconic names in Toyota sports car heritage. Both vehicles will be driven by a new 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder petrol engine, or G20E. The new powerplant is said to deliver more than 400 horsepower in road form, with motorsport variants later producing more than 600 horsepower.
The MR2, with its mid-engine layout, will most likely evolve the concept that was shown at the 2025 Tokyo Auto Salon. The concept car saw the G20E engine positioned behind the rear seats, like most mid-engine sports cars. The new MR2 might arrive by 2028, with a production model of the concept in the pipeline.
Conversely, the Celica will have the same engine but mounted under the bonnet with four-wheel drive. The Celica would return to the World Rally Championship (WRC), possibly with the "GT-Four" nameplate, which previously has been applied to Celica models that have competed in the WRC during the 1980s and 1990s.
Aside from the MR2 and Celica, Toyota's luxury division Lexus is also working on a new supercar to replace the LFA. The new car will be expected to utilize a turbocharged V8 motor with an output of 500-600 horsepower, according to reports. Hybrid technology is also expected to trickle down into the road car.
Spy photos of the Lexus supercar prototype have already been out, and it will be entering the GT3 racing competition in 2026. The vehicle has been spotted doing test runs on large racing circuits, such as Spa-Francorchamps and the Nürburgring, and will be approved by the FIA for racing. The road-going version of this supercar will come first before the race car version.
