Volkswagen seems ready to strengthen its SUV game in India with a bigger, more premium offering — the Tayron. This upcoming three-row SUV has been spotted testing multiple times, signalling that its launch could be just around the corner.
The Tayron is expected to sit above the Tiguan R-Line, which was launched earlier this year as a five-seater SUV. While the R-Line adds sportiness and style to Volkswagen’s India portfolio, it misses out on third-row practicality — something the Tayron promises to deliver.
With the Tiguan Allspace discontinued in 2021, Volkswagen hasn’t had a 7-seater SUV in its lineup. The Tayron could fill that gap, competing in a segment where space, comfort, and versatility are key selling points.
The Tayron shares Volkswagen’s signature SUV styling but carries unique touches like a revised grille, different headlamp and tail-lamp designs, and sportier bumpers. Its stretched wheelbase means more legroom for passengers and enough boot space to handle weekend getaways.
The SUV can hold 345 litres of luggage with all seats up, expanding to 850 litres when the third row is folded — giving it serious practicality credentials.
The Tayron spotted in India wore R-Line badging, hinting that Volkswagen may bring the sportier variant to the market from day one. Expect larger alloy wheels, premium interiors, and a feature list similar to the Tiguan but with extra space for passengers.
Inside, the cabin is likely to offer a large infotainment display, a digital driver’s display, premium materials, and advanced safety features — all in line with Volkswagen’s global standards.
Under the bonnet, the Tayron for India is expected to borrow the 2.0-litre turbo-petrol engine from the Skoda Kodiaq, producing 204 bhp and 320 Nm of torque. This will be paired with a 7-speed DSG automatic and all-wheel drive.
There’s also talk of the Tayron being locally assembled at Volkswagen’s facility in Chhatrapati Sambhaji Nagar, which could help keep prices competitive against rivals.
While Volkswagen hasn’t confirmed the India launch yet, the repeated test runs and finished-looking prototypes suggest that the Tayron could make its debut sooner rather than later. Once here, it will compete with the Skoda Kodiaq, MG Gloster, and Toyota Fortuner, offering buyers a new choice in the premium 7-seater SUV segment.
