Volkswagen Plans to Drop 50% of Its Models by 2030

Volkswagen to reduce its global model line-up by up to 50%. Fewer variants and shared platforms planned. Move aims to lower costs and improve efficiency.

Volkswagen Group has announced a major global strategy that could reshape its entire vehicle portfolio over the next few years. The company plans to reduce its global model line-up by up to 50 percent by 2030 as part of a broader effort to simplify its business and lower costs. Along with fewer models, Volkswagen also plans to cut the number of variants, reduce production capacity and increase the sharing of technology across its brands.

Half of the Current Models Could Be Removed

As part of its long-term plan, Volkswagen says it will gradually reduce the number of vehicles it offers worldwide. Instead of covering every segment with multiple models, the company wants to focus on products that have stronger customer demand and better business potential. Volkswagen has not revealed which models will be discontinued. The decision could affect brands across the group, including Volkswagen, Skoda, Audi, SEAT, Cupra, Porsche, Bentley and Lamborghini.

Fewer Variants, Simpler Product Range

The company is also planning to reduce what it calls "offering complexity" by up to 75 percent. This means future Volkswagen Group models are likely to be offered with fewer trim levels, equipment combinations and optional features. A simpler product range is expected to reduce manufacturing costs and speed up development. Volkswagen also plans to use fewer vehicle platforms and electronic systems, allowing more models across different brands to share the same technology.

Production Capacity Will Be Reduced

Volkswagen is targeting an annual production capacity of around 9 million vehicles. Before the Covid-19 pandemic, the group had the ability to produce around 12 million vehicles every year. That number has already been reduced over the past few years, and the company now plans to make further cuts, especially in Europe and China.

Why Volkswagen Is Making These Changes

The German carmaker says the new strategy is designed to make the business more efficient and better prepared for future challenges. Growing competition from Chinese automakers, stricter regulations, higher development costs and changing global demand have all increased pressure on the company. Volkswagen's profits have also fallen significantly compared to 2021, making cost reduction a key priority. Volkswagen Group CEO Oliver Blume said the company wants to become faster, more competitive and more focused by reducing complexity and investing in technologies that can be used across multiple brands.

More Changes Could Follow

Reports suggest the restructuring could also lead to additional job cuts and factory closures, although Volkswagen has not officially confirmed these plans. For now, the biggest confirmed change is the company's decision to reduce its model range by half over the next five years. It marks one of the biggest product strategy changes in Volkswagen Group's history and is expected to influence future models across all of its brands.
