After Sierra, Tata Could Revive Sumo Nameplate

Tata Motors is likely to introduce an SUV-styled 3-row model The upcoming 3-row model could be called the Tata Sumo

Tata Motors has announced to introduce 6 new nameplates in the Indian market by FY2031. The company plans to introduce more than 20 refreshes and facelifts of the existing range. It is expected that the homegrown passenger vehicle maker will enter newer segments, including a three-row MPV. Adding to it, the Avinya nameplate is confirmed to be introduced in our market in 2027.

Tata Motors is expected to introduce an SUV-styled 3-row vehicle, which will target both commercial and private buyers. This segment is currently dominated by Maruti Suzuki Ertiga, Kia Carens Clavis and the Maruti XL6. Similar to the Sierra, the homegrown automaker could bring back the Tata Sumo nameplate. The 3-row SUV-styled model could carry the SUMO name; however, Tata Motors is yet to make an official announcement on the same,

Tata Motors historically uses the Auto Expo platform to showcase its future products. And, the next edition of Bharat Mobility Global Expo could debut the Tata Sumo nameplate in a concept avatar. This is all speculations, as Tata is yet to reveal the original plans. The company could use the ARGOS platform to design and develop the new MPV. This platform currently underpins the Sierra ICE.

Previous reports suggest that Tata Motors is also developing a new lifestyle SUV, which will sit below 4 meters in length. Codenamed Tata Scarlet, the new SUV will share the styling cues with the Tata Sierra. It will rival the likes of the Renault Bridger and the Mahindra Vision S. The new SUV will sit right between the Nexon and the Curvv.
