Renault Duster Strong hybrid launching this Diwali Next-gen Creta and Seltos to receive hybrid engine in 2027
The Indian passenger vehicle market is undergoing a massive shift as rising fuel prices and stricter emission norms push carmakers towards alternative fuel options, electrification predominantly. The midsize SUV segment is also affected by these changes, and three market heavyweights - the Renault Duster, Kia Seltos, and Hyundai Creta - are gearing up to introduce self-charging strong hybrid powertrains. These three models will directly challenge the dominance of Toyota-Maruti Suzuki in the midsize hybrid space.
Renault had launched the new generation Duster SUV in the country in March 2026. The SUV is currently available with a 1.0L turbo petrol and a 1.3L turbo petrol engine. However, the iconic nameplate will soon receive a strong hybrid powertrain.
It will be powered by a 18-litre, 4-cylinder, petrol engine paired with an electric motor, a starter generator and a 1.4 kW battery pack. The combined power and torque output stands at 160 hp and 172 Nm, respectively, making it one of the most powerful hybrid setups in its class. Deliveries are scheduled to begin around Diwali 2026, however, its initial production run for 2026 is already sold out. In fact, bookings for the hybrid Duster is temporarily halted. The company claims that the SUV can run up to 80% of the time in City on pure electric mode.

The two top-sellers, the Hyundai Creta and Kia Seltos will receive a strong hybrid powertrain in 2027. While the Kia Seltos has already entered the new generation, Hyundai is preparing the next-gen Creta which is scheduled to be launched sometime in first half of 2027. Both SUVs will receive a self-charging hybrid powertrain, but Hyundai will first launch the hybrid engine with the new Creta.
The global-spec Kia Seltos is powered by a 1.6-litre naturally-aspirated petrol engine mated to a 43 hp electric motor, offering a combined power output of 141 hp. However, the India-spec Kia Seltos and next-gen Hyundai Creta are likely to get an all-new locally developed self-charging hybrid engine. The new powertrain is reportedly to be based on the 1.5L naturally-aspirated gasoline engine, and is expected to deliver a fuel efficiency of around 25kmpl.
