Tata’s First ICE Model with AWD Setup Arriving in 2027

Tata Sierra ICE AWD version confirmed for 2027 Sierra EV, Safari EV and Avinya X will also receive AWD setup Sierra is based on ARGOS platform, which is compatible with AWD drivetrain

Tata Motors is bringing off-road pedigree back to its internal combustion engine (ICE) lineup. The homegrown automaker has confirmed that the Tata Sierra ICE version will receive a dedicated All-Wheel Drive (AWD) setup in 2027. The Hexa was the brand’s last model to offer 4x4 drivetrain, and the Sierra will become Tata’s first modern ICE vehicle to send power to all four wheels.

The New ARGOS Platform

The new Sierra ICE is built on Tata’s brand new All-Terrain Ready Omni-Energy and Geometry Scalable Architecture (ARGOS) platform. Unlike older architectures that restricted rear-axle power delivery, the ARGOS is designed and engineered from ground up to support both FWD and AWD drivetrains along with multiple fuel options.

Another big update is that Jeep will also source the new ARGOS platform to manufacture an India-centric SUV. This SUV will be manufactured at Stellantis-Tata production plant in Ranjangaon, Pune, Maharashtra. The upcoming Jeep SUV will also come with off-road credentials.

Tata Sierra - AWD with Turbo Petrol

The Sierra is available with three engine options, including a 1.5-litre naturally-aspirated petrol, a 1.5L direct-injection turbo petrol and a 1.5L turbo diesel. While the standard versions comes with front-wheel-drive setup, the high-end trims with 1.5L GDi engine are likely to receive the AWD option in 2027.

The Sierra ICE Engine Lineup

1.5L naturally-aspirated petrol - 104bhp and 145N, six-speed manual or a 7-speed dual-clutch automatic gearbox (DCT) gearbox.

1.5L Turbo Diesel - 116bhp and 260Nm (Manual) / 280Nm (Automatic). 6-speed manual and a 6-speed torque converter automatic.

1.5L Direct-Injection Turbo Petrol - 158bhp and 255Nm. 6-speed manual and a 6-speed torque converter automatic gearbox.

Upcoming Tata EVs with AWD setup

Tata Motors will launch 3 new electric SUV in 2026 and 2027 with AWD setup. The long-awaited Tata Sierra EV is set to be introduced on June 30, 2026, while the Safari EV 7-seater model will arrive by Diwali 2026. Big news is that Tata Motors has confirmed that its luxury EV brand, the AVINYA will be introduced before the end of this financial year. The Avinya X concept based electric SUV will be the first model to be launched under the new luxury nameplate.
