2027 Compact SUV War: All-New Kia Sonet and Tata Nexon Coming in 2027

Next-gen Kia Sonet testing begins New Nexon arriving in 2027

The sub-4 meter SUV segment is preparing for a massive shake-up, as several new models such as Mahindra Vision S and Renault Bridger are set to launch in 2027. Two of the segment’s heavyweights - the Kia Sonet and the Tata Nexon - will also undergo full generational change next year. Testing of the new Kia Sonet has already been started, suggesting an early next year launch.

With both models now in development phase, here is a detailed look at what next-gen Sonet and Next-gen Nexon will bring to Indian roads.

Next-gen Kia Sonet

Next-gen Kia Sonet testing begins

The Kia Sonet has been one of the best-sellers for the Korean Giant since its 2020 debut. However, the SUV has been criticised for its tight rear-seat legroom. With the next-generation Sonet, Kia will be aiming to fix this by switching to a newer platform.

The K1 architecture: Instead of the current K2 platform, the next-gen Kia Sonet will be based on the newer K1 platform that also underpins the Kia Syros and the new Hyundai Venue. Thanks to newer platform, the next Sonet will have a longer wheelbase along with an improved cabin packaging.

Upright Stance: Instead of the crossover-ish profile, the next-gen Sonet will have a more upright stance. Styling will be inspired by bigger Kia SUVs, including the Seltos and EV9. Inside the cabin, the SUV is expected to get dual 12.3-inch curved screens, a 360-degree surround view camera, powered driver’s seat, and Camera + Radar based LEVEL 2 ADAS suite.

Powertrains: It is likely to retain the existing 1.2L NA, 1.0L turbo petrol, and 1.5L diesel engines. However, Kia is reportedly developing a new entry-level hybrid powertrain to power its smaller products. The Hybrid version is likely to join the lineup by 2028.

Next-Gen Tata Nexon

First launched in 2017, the Tata Nexon has been the best-selling compact SUV in the Indian market. The SUV is set to enter the next generation in 2027. Called the Project Garud, the next-gen Nexon subcompact SUV will be based on the existing X1 platform, which was first introduced in late 1990s. However, the platform has been upgraded multiple times over the years. The platform is likely to receive massive structural changes.

New Platform: the next-gen Nexon will be based on the updated version of the X1 platform, which will allow for better safety ratings, and larger battery integration for the EV.

Design Cues: the new Nexon is expected to retain its coupe-like silhouette, which is liked by Indian customers. The SUV will have a sharper, more coupe-like silhouette but with a “rugged” edge. It will be equipped with a panoramic sunroof across more variants.

Engine Options: the next-generation Tata Nexon is most likely to be offered with petrol and CNG powertrains. It is early to comment whether the SUV will get a diesel engine or not. The current model gets a 1.5L diesel engine, which meet the BS6.2 emissions norms without the use of an expensive SCR (Selective Catalytic Reduction) system. However, the engine will need to be upgraded to meet the upcoming BS7 emission regulations which will be expensive for the Indian market. To counter the diesel, Tata may introduce a Petrol-Hybrid variant.
