BMW’s first all-electric sedan, the i5 LWB, is launching in early 2026. Local assembly in India will help keep prices competitive. The i5 LWB will compete with the Mercedes-Benz E-Class in the luxury EV segment.
BMW is gearing up to bring the i5 LWB (long-wheelbase) electric sedan to the Indian market, with the official launch likely to happen in early 2026. The i5 LWB will be BMW’s first all-electric sedan to be produced locally at its Chennai facility, alongside the iX1. Based on the China-spec i5, the Indian version will feature a more spacious cabin and be positioned above the current 530Li but below the sportier i5 M60 in BMW’s 5 Series lineup.

One of the key modifications for the Indian-spec i5 LWB is an improvement in ground clearance. Early feedback from test drives, including reports from Autocar India, revealed that the i5 M60’s low ride height and soft suspension made it prone to scraping over speed bumps and rough roads. To address this, BMW has reworked the chassis, increasing ground clearance, ensuring a more comfortable ride for Indian roads.
While the changes to the ride height were the primary delay, the redesigned suspension and improved ride quality will make the i5 more practical for Indian consumers. BMW’s decision to tweak the i5’s chassis shows the brand’s commitment to tailoring its products for the local market, particularly as electric vehicle adoption increases.
The i5 LWB for India is expected to be offered in the eDrive40L variant, which will come equipped with a rear-mounted electric motor delivering 340 hp and 430Nm of torque. Power will come from a 97kWh battery, offering a range of up to 713 km on the China’s CLTC cycle. However, BMW anticipates that the range could be slightly lower in Indian conditions, where factors like driving style and road conditions play a role.
The primary focus of the i5 LWB is to balance performance and efficiency, offering a refined driving experience that suits the needs of Indian customers. With the increased demand for electric sedans, BMW’s strategy is to offer an EV that meets local driving conditions and provides a premium experience without compromising on everyday usability.
The BMW i5 LWB is expected to be priced in the range of Rs 90 lakh to Rs 1 crore (ex-showroom) for the Indian market. With local assembly in Chennai, BMW will be able to keep costs competitive despite the higher cost of the electric battery. The 5% GST on electric vehicles will further help in making the i5 more affordable compared to petrol or diesel alternatives, giving BMW an edge over the competition.
In terms of competition, the i5 LWB will face off against the Mercedes-Benz E-Class in the premium sedan segment. Mercedes continues to dominate this space with its diesel-powered variants, but with BMW’s shift toward electric, the i5 LWB could offer a strong alternative for customers seeking a more sustainable option. If successful, the i5 could become a significant player in the growing premium electric sedan segment, challenging rivals like Mercedes-Benz and Audi.
