Chery-JLR unveils Freelander 8 – first SUV under new brand, debut in 2026. Features futuristic design, 6-seat layout, and dash-integrated Mini LED screen. Built on dedicated platform with electric, hybrid, and range-extender powertrains.
Chery-JLR has officially revealed the Freelander 8, the first production SUV under its new Freelander brand. Based on the recently showcased Concept 97, the Freelander 8 is the start of a six-model SUV line-up that the company plans to launch over the next five years.
The production SUV will make its global debut in 2026, with China expected to get the first units, followed by a wider international rollout.
The Freelander 8 retains much of the Concept 97’s futuristic styling while paying homage to the original Freelander through its triangular glass motif, visible across the exterior.
Unlike the concept, the production model replaces the signature suicide doors with conventional doors, but keeps the large dual-tone alloy wheels and sharp side profile.
The front bumper now features rectangular elements and air vents, and “Freelander” branding is prominently displayed on both the grille and tailgate, giving it a bold and recognizable presence.

Although official interior images are yet to be released, Chery-JLR has confirmed several high-tech and comfort-focused features. The SUV will include a dash-integrated Mini LED screen spanning the windshield, showing vehicle status, navigation, road conditions, and weather information.
The front row seats are elevated for a commanding view of the road, while the rear “zero-gravity” seats offer high reclining angles, providing comfort for long journeys. The Freelander 8 is expected to come in a 6-seat configuration, catering to families and premium SUV buyers.
The Freelander 8 is built on a dedicated platform capable of supporting electric, plug-in hybrid, and range-extender powertrains. The electric version is expected to use an 800V architecture, enabling fast charging and high efficiency.
Advanced driver-assistance features will be powered by a Huawei-developed ADAS system and a roof-mounted LiDAR sensor, while all vehicle electronics will be managed by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8397 chip. The SUV will also include a multi-terrain management system, enhancing off-road capability.
While no exact launch date has been announced, the Freelander 8 is expected to arrive in the second half of 2026. This SUV will kickstart Chery-JLR’s new brand journey, combining futuristic design, premium interiors, and versatile powertrain options, and is likely to attract buyers looking for a tech-forward and family-friendly SUV.
