Next-Gen Range Rover Velar to Get a Big Change – Hybrid Power Confirmed

New Range Rover Velar replacement is in development. JLR's first full-hybrid powertrain is on the way. EV version could offer over 750 km WLTP range.

Jaguar Land Rover is working on an all-new replacement for the Range Rover Velar, and it will be very different from the current model. The new SUV is expected to feature a fresh design, a new platform and, for the first time, a full-hybrid powertrain alongside a fully electric version.

The next-generation model is expected to make its global debut towards the end of this year, with the electric version likely to go on sale in early 2027.

JLR's First Full-Hybrid Powertrain

One of the biggest changes is under the bonnet. JLR has confirmed that its new EMA platform will support a full-hybrid powertrain, marking the first time the company will offer this type of technology. Until now, JLR has focused mainly on mild-hybrid and plug-in hybrid systems.

The company says the new full-hybrid setup will be a completely new addition to its powertrain lineup. Technical details have not been revealed yet, but the move shows JLR is expanding its electrification strategy.

Besides the full-hybrid version, the new Velar replacement is also expected to be offered with mild-hybrid, plug-in hybrid and fully electric powertrain options.

New Platform for Future Models

The upcoming SUV will be built on JLR's new EMA (Electrified Modular Architecture) platform.

The platform was initially planned only for electric vehicles, but JLR has now confirmed that it will also support hybrid powertrains. This gives the company more flexibility as demand for different types of electrified vehicles continues to grow across global markets.

Fresh Coupe-Inspired Design

The new model is expected to look very different from the current Velar. Reports suggest it will adopt a sleeker, coupe-inspired shape to compete with models such as the BMW X4, Audi Q5 Sportback and Mercedes-Benz GLC Coupe.

However, unlike these rivals, the new Range Rover is expected to retain the brand's signature styling with a straighter roofline, sharply angled D-pillar and a unique rear design that keeps its SUV identity intact.

Electric Version Could Offer Over 750 km Range

The fully electric version is expected to be the first model launched. Although official specifications are yet to be announced, reports suggest the EV could offer a WLTP driving range of more than 750 km. It is also expected to support DC fast charging at over 300 kW, allowing significantly quicker charging times.

India Launch Could Follow Later

The new Range Rover Velar replacement is expected to make its global debut by the end of 2026, while the electric version is likely to reach international markets in the first quarter of 2027. Hybrid variants, including the new full-hybrid model, are expected to arrive later in 2027.
