Next-Gen Range Rover Velar To Debut As EV; Hybrid Version Confirmed

New Velar will launch as an EV first. Hybrid version confirmed for a later stage. New EMA platform and 800V tech expected.

Land Rover is preparing to introduce the next-generation Range Rover Velar, and it will bring a major change under the skin. The luxury SUV is expected to make its global debut within the next six months as a fully electric model, while a hybrid version has also been confirmed for a later stage.

The move reflects Jaguar Land Rover's updated strategy of offering multiple powertrain options instead of going fully electric right away.

EV Launch First, Hybrid To Join Later

The upcoming Velar successor will initially arrive with an all-electric powertrain. However, Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) has confirmed that the SUV will also get a hybrid version in the future, giving buyers more flexibility depending on market demand.

The company says demand for combustion engine-based vehicles remains strong in several regions, which is why it has decided to expand its hybrid portfolio alongside electric vehicles.

Built On A New Platform

The new Velar will be based on JLR's Electrified Modular Architecture (EMA) platform.

Originally developed for electric vehicles, the EMA architecture has now been updated to support hybrid powertrains as well. This will allow JLR to produce both EV and hybrid versions of the SUV without developing separate platforms.

Fast Charging Tech Expected

While the company has not revealed battery specifications yet, reports suggest the electric Velar could feature an 800V electrical architecture. This would enable significantly faster charging compared to conventional EVs and bring it closer to the upcoming Range Rover Electric in terms of technology.

The batteries are expected to come from Tata's Agratas battery facility in the UK.

Fresh Design Inside And Out

Spy images indicate that the next-generation Velar will move away from the traditional SUV styling and adopt a sleeker, coupe-inspired design.

The SUV is expected to feature a sharply sloping roofline, smoother body surfaces and a more aerodynamic shape. Despite the sportier styling, its overall size is likely to remain close to the current Velar, measuring around 4.8 metres in length.

Premium Rivals In Sight

Once launched, the new Velar will continue to compete in the premium midsize SUV segment against models such as the BMW X3, Mercedes-Benz GLC and Volvo XC60, along with their electric counterparts.
