Toyota Aqua Hybrid, also called the Prius C in other countries, has been spotted on Indian roads again. This raises the question of whether Toyota plans to launch it in India. While it's not confirmed yet, the testing suggests Toyota might be evaluating hybrid technology for Indian conditions, similar to other hybrid cars like the Toyota Mirai and Hyundai Nexo, which are also being tested in India.

Toyota Aqua is one of the most affordable full hybrid cars in the world, starting at around Rs 12.5 lakh in Japan. In India, where there’s a demand for affordable, fuel-efficient cars, the Aqua could stand out, especially in the sub-4-meter hatchback segment. It offers a mileage of 35.8 kmpl, which is better than many CNG hatchbacks available in India.
While Toyota hasn’t officially announced plans to launch the Aqua in India, the ongoing tests suggest the company is considering whether hybrid technology could work in the Indian market. As hybrid tech grows in popularity here, Toyota may be planning the Aqua as a future option for Indian consumers.
Hybrid technology is becoming more popular in India. Many carmakers, including Honda, Skoda, Volkswagen, Hyundai, and Mahindra, are working on hybrid models for their future cars. Even Maruti Suzuki, the largest carmaker in India, is developing an affordable hybrid system, which could be used in cars like the Swift, WagonR, and Dzire. While it’s unclear if Maruti’s hybrid tech will be linked to Toyota’s, cars like the Toyota Taisor (a rebadged Maruti Fronx) might benefit from hybrid technology in the future.

Toyota Aqua is built on the TNGA-B (Toyota New Global Architecture - B) platform, which focuses on improving driving performance, safety, and fuel economy. The car is 4,050 mm long, 1,695 mm wide, and 1,485–1,505 mm high, making it a compact and spacious hatchback.
One of Aqua’s highlights is its advanced bipolar Nickel-Metal Hydride (Ni-MH) battery, which gives almost double the power of regular Ni-MH batteries. This improves acceleration and overall performance. The battery is also compact, well-cooled, and long-lasting, with affordable replacement costs.
Under the hood, the Toyota Aqua has a 1.5-liter, 3-cylinder petrol engine that produces 90 hp and 120 Nm of torque. The car is available in both front-wheel drive (FWD) and all-wheel drive (AWD) versions. The front electric motor generates 80 hp and 141 Nm of torque, while the rear motor in the AWD version adds 6.4 hp and 52 Nm of torque. The total output for FWD models is 116 hp. The Aqua uses an e-CVT transmission, with driving modes for both Eco and EV.

Toyota Aqua comes with a range of premium features, such as a 10.5-inch touchscreen, a 4.2-inch multi-information display, a head-up display, and heated seats and steering wheel. It also includes advanced safety features like ADAS (Advanced Driver Assistance Systems), which offer lane-keeping assist, adaptive cruise control, and automatic emergency braking.
Although Toyota has not officially confirmed a launch date for the Aqua Hybrid in India, the ongoing tests and evaluation suggest the company is seriously considering it. With its affordable price, great fuel economy, and eco-friendly hybrid powertrain, the Aqua could become a strong competitor in India’s growing green car market. If launched, it could offer Indian buyers an efficient, low-emission alternative to traditional petrol and diesel cars.
