Hyundai overtakes Mahindra in July 2025 retail sales with 42,661 units. Mahindra leads wholesale numbers with 83,691 vehicles sold. Tata Motors records highest-ever monthly EV sales at 7,124 units. Maruti Suzuki continues to dominate the Indian car market with 1.28 lakh units sold.
The Indian passenger vehicle market witnessed an interesting shift in July 2025. While Mahindra & Mahindra led wholesale dispatches, Hyundai Motor India took the second spot in retail sales, overtaking Mahindra in actual deliveries to customers. Tata Motors, on the other hand, continued to gain momentum in the electric vehicle space with its highest-ever EV sales.
As per Vahan data, Hyundai sold 42,661 units in July 2025, climbing to the second spot in retail sales. The brand also improved its market share, rising from 12.9% in June to 13.2% in July. This growth was largely driven by the continued popularity of its SUV lineup, especially the Creta, which recently completed 10 years in India.
Meanwhile, Mahindra dropped to third place with retail sales of 41,476 units. The company’s market share slipped from 14% in June to 12.8% in July. Tata Motors followed closely behind with 39,795 units sold at retail, and its market share also dipped slightly from 12.3% to 11.7%.
Maruti Suzuki remained firmly in the lead, recording retail sales of 1,28,423 units and maintaining a strong 40% market share. Toyota held onto fifth position with 24,777 units sold.
Despite falling behind in retail sales, Mahindra topped wholesale dispatches in July. The company sold a total of 83,691 vehicles, marking a strong 26% year-on-year growth. This figure includes exports and highlights Mahindra’s continued dominance in utility vehicles and commercial segments. In the domestic market alone, Mahindra sold 49,871 utility vehicles.
Tata Motors came in second in wholesale numbers, selling 69,131 units across domestic and international markets. While total passenger vehicle sales saw a 12% year-on-year decline, the brand achieved a major milestone in electric mobility. Tata sold 7,124 electric vehicles in July – its highest-ever monthly EV sales, showing a 42% jump compared to the same period last year.
Hyundai followed with total sales of 60,073 units, which includes 43,973 units sold in the domestic market and 16,100 units exported. SUVs made up 71.8% of Hyundai’s domestic sales, the highest SUV contribution ever for the brand in India.
If we go by wholesale dispatches, Mahindra clearly led the pack with strong numbers and steady growth. However, in terms of actual customer deliveries, Hyundai edged ahead of Mahindra to take second place in the retail market. Tata Motors, while facing pressure in overall volumes, remains a key player in the growing EV segment.
As the festive season approaches, all three brands are expected to gear up with new launches, improved supply chains, and aggressive marketing strategies to capture buyer interest.
