British automaker Land Rover has introduced the New Defender 130 in India. It’s the third and longest body style for the SUV, with the 90 and 110 models already on sale in the country. The 130 is offered with both diesel and petrol powertrain options and offers seating for up to eight persons. We take a closer look.
The overall design of the Defender 130 stays identical to the smaller models, retaining its boxy, intimidating, squared-off styling. Move to the side and you will notice how much longer the 130 really is. It is 340 mm longer than the 110, and all of that length is behind the rear axle which leads to a very large rear overhang.
Inside, the Defender 130’s longer body allows the SUV to fit up to 8 occupants in a 2-3-3 seating layout. The three rows use a stadium format in which the middle and third rows are set slightly higher for better forward visibility. The second row itself can slide forward and fold down to allow easier access to the last row. Currently, the 130 is the only premium SUV that can seat more than 7 people.
In terms of features, the SUV offers a 11.4-inch touchscreen infotainment system running on the latest Pivi-Pro software, fully digital instrument cluster, connected car tech, two sunroofs, wireless charging, 14-way electrically adjustable front seats, a 360-degree camera, and optional four-zone climate control.
Both petrol and diesel options are offered with the Land Rover Defender 130. The former is a 3-litre 6-cylinder turbo-petrol engine making 394 bhp with 550 Nm of peak torque. The latter is a 3-litre 6-pot diesel mill churning out 297 bhp alongside 650 Nm torque. Both powertrains get mild hybrid-tech and are paired to an 8-speed torque converter automatic transmission.
