As suggested by reports, British marquee Jaguar Land Rover has confirmed to be working on an all-electric version of its premium model, the Defender. It is also said that the latest version of the hardcore 4x4 is likely to be offered with full electric versions of the 90, 110, and 130 models which will arrive as part of refreshed Defender line-up in 2025. However, the customer deliveries will take place in 2026. According to rumors, Land Rover could also introduce an all-electric version of the Discovery which will share the same platform and production lines as the Defender.
The updated Defender will be based on a new platform; it will switch from the current D7 Premium Lightweight Architecture to the advanced MLA Flex platform of Land Rover. The MLA Flex platform can support all-electric powertrains and internal combustion engines. Currently, the MLA Fex platform underpins the New-Gen Range Rover and Range Rover Sport with their all-electric versions due in 2024.
As the 2025 Defender will get an all-electric powertrain, the model is likely to boost its off-road performance. Greater control of the electric power delivery through software management is quite possible along with advanced torque vectoring. In addition, the flat underside of the all-electric Defender will deliver better ground clearance.
Although the upcoming electric SUV will get a new platform, the model is likely to retain its design and styling; as it will be a mid-cycle update. The Defender Facelift is likely to have similar dimensions as the existing one. The same is expected for the interior layout. However, there could be some mild upgrades to the infotainment system. The 2025 Land Rover Defender is expected to get a little bigger screen, suggested by some reports.
The technical details for the electric four wheeler are yet to be revealed but Land Rover insider's story suggests that the 2025 Defender will have a battery of around 100 kWh which is likely to provide 483 km of driving range on one single charge.
