Mahindra & Mahindra has committed to launch the electric version of its sub-compact SUV the XUV300 in India. The first all-electric SUV from the brand is believed to be called the eXUV300 and will be revealed by the end of 2022 with a market launch planned for March 2023.

Mahindra XUV300 EV: Powertrain, Rival, Pricing and more

Making most of the tax benefits available for EVs over 4-metres in length, Mahindra has increased the size of the vehicle to 4.2-metres. It is built on SsangYong Tivoli’s modular architecture and will offer more space and practicality than its ICE counterpart.

Currently, the company is tight-lipped about the vehicle's powertrain details, but we expect the SUV to come powered by a 150 bhp single motor unit channeling power to the front wheels. The battery pack will have high-density NMC pouch cells technology in the interest of more power and better driving range. On the inside, the four-wheeler is expected to be provided with equipment like ADAS, Connected Car tech and other feel-good features.

Based on state subsidies available, we expect the EV to be priced around Rs 15 lakh – Rs 19 lakh (ex-showroom). Once launched, the Nexon EV will be the direct competitor to this vehicle.

Mahindra’s EV plans:

The homegrown carmaker plans to launch 13 new SUVs by 2027, of which 8 will be EVs. Furthermore, 4 SUVs from the range are expected to be ground up EVs while the rest are expected to be based on their ICE counterparts.

Additionally, the automaker is said to launch its Born Electric Vision program in July 2022. Under this initiative, we can expect 3 all-new electric SUVs, which will be designed at Mahindra’s Advanced Design Studio in the UK under the leadership of Pratap Bose.

Earlier this month, Mahindra signed an agreement with the Volkswagen group, under which the carmaker can use the VW’s MEB (Modular Electric Drive Matrix) platform and several other electric components for its EV vehicles. However, it is unclear whether the carmaker will use the MEB platform for the Electric XUV 300 or not. The carmaker aims to become India’s No. 1 UV manufacturer by 2025.
