Maruti Suzuki Working on 2 New SUVs

Maruti Suzuki is developing a new sub-four-metre SUV for the Nexa lineup. The Y43 could rival the Tata Punch and Hyundai Exter. The Fronx facelift could get hybrid technology and Level 2 ADAS.

Maruti Suzuki is preparing two new SUVs as part of its upcoming product expansion. The company is working on a new sub-four-metre SUV for the Nexa lineup, while the Fronx is also set to receive a major facelift with possible changes to its powertrain and technology. The two models will target different parts of the compact SUV market, with the new SUV positioned below the Fronx and expected to take on models such as the Tata Punch and Hyundai Exter.

New Maruti Y43 SUV in the Works

The new model, currently known internally as the Y43, is expected to be a sub-four-metre SUV and could eventually replace the Ignis in Maruti Suzuki’s lower-priced Nexa portfolio. Unlike the Ignis, the upcoming SUV is expected to have a more conventional SUV stance. It could feature a higher bonnet, greater ground clearance and a more upright body design, giving it a more SUV-focused appearance.

The Y43 is being developed for the growing compact SUV segment, where it will face competition from the Tata Punch and Hyundai Exter. The model is expected to use Maruti Suzuki’s new 1.2-litre Z-Series petrol engine. A factory-fitted CNG version has also been reported, although this has not been officially confirmed. Maruti is yet to reveal the final design, engine specifications or production name of the SUV. The Y43 is currently expected around 2027, but the launch timeline remains tentative.

Fronx Facelift Could Bring Bigger Changes

The second SUV-related project is the Fronx facelift. Test vehicles have already been spotted, and the updated crossover is expected to get changes to its grille, bumpers and lighting elements. The facelift could also bring more significant mechanical changes. Maruti is reportedly considering its new 1.2-litre Z-Series petrol engine along with in-house series-hybrid technology.

Unlike a conventional hybrid, a series-hybrid system uses the petrol engine primarily as a generator, while an electric motor drives the wheels. Reports suggest Maruti could target fuel efficiency of around 30-35kmpl, although this figure is not confirmed yet. The updated Fronx could also get Level 2 ADAS. This could bring features such as adaptive cruise control, lane-keeping assistance and autonomous emergency braking to the crossover.
