MG has been making waves in the Indian electric vehicle (EV) segment, and competition appears to be heating up. The MG Windsor EV, which was launched in September 2024, has been showing good performance. Now, the company is gearing up to launch a new variant with a bigger battery. This new variant, which will come in April 2025, will try to take on competitors such as the Hyundai Creta Electric with better range and features.
MG Windsor EV was incredibly popular during the time of release. Owing to its uniqueness and "Baas" (Battery as a Service) financing option, it gained a solid customer base. The car features lower down payment costs, which are highly sought after by many customers.
However, while the Windsor EV is loved for its specs and technology, it possesses limited range most customers would wish for. This will be changed by MG introducing a version of the vehicle equipped with a much larger 50 kWh battery pack. The new battery ought to improve the vehicle's range a lot, making the vehicle a higher-ranking unit in the rising trend of the EV market.
The new MG Windsor EV will come equipped with a 50 kWh lithium-ion battery. The battery is also utilized in MG's global EVs, including the ZS EV. With the bigger battery, the Windsor EV will come with an estimated driving range of up to 460 km per charge. The new battery comes as an option on the more expensive models of the vehicle, so it is considered a premium feature.
The 50 kWh battery pack will also improve the performance of the car. The MG ZS EV, which boasts a comparable battery, can speed from 0 to 100 km/h in just 8.6 seconds and achieve a top speed of 175 km/h. While the current version of the Windsor EV is already a success, this range extender version should make it an even greater attraction to consumers.
Current MG Windsor EV features a 38 kWh LFP battery and boasts a full-charge driving range of 331 km. The car comes with a front axle-mounted motor delivering 136 bhp and 200 Nm of torque. The vehicle is priced at Rs. 13.50 lakh and goes up to Rs. 15.50 lakh (ex-showroom) depending on the variant.
With the new 50 kWh battery pack, the price of the Windsor EV will increase by about Rs. 1 lakh to Rs. 1.5 lakh. While the price will be much higher, the larger battery and higher range should attract more customers.
In Indonesia, for instance, MG Windsor EV is already marketing the 50 kWh battery pack under a brand name of Wuling Cloud. The Indian version of the vehicle, however, lacks ADAS (Advanced Driver Assistance System), which is available in the Wuling Cloud EV. Incorporating ADAS in the Windsor EV can also enhance its demand.
The Hyundai Creta Electric is one of the bigger players in India's EV segment. It has two batteries: a 42 kWh with a range estimated to be around 390 km and a 51.4 kWh with an estimated range of 473 km. The Creta Electric also boasts decent 0-100 km/h acceleration in 7.9 seconds and is equipped with features like a 10.25-inch touchscreen screen, Bose sound system, and i-Pedal technology for smooth driving. It is priced between Rs. 17.99 lakh and Rs. 23.50 lakh, though with more features and a higher range but pricier.
The MG Windsor EV, which comes with a new 50 kWh battery in 2025, will take over from the Creta Electric. The Windsor EV will have the same range but at a reduced price, making it even more competitive in the EV segment.
