German car manufacturer BMW has unveiled its most powerful M5 saloon yet. Underpinned by a brand-new platform, the upcoming car will also house a plug-in hybrid system with 717 bhp on tap. India launch is expected in 2025.

The M5 gets a partially closed illuminated kidney grille finished in gloss black. Further, the air intakes ahead have been enlarged and rear tracks made wider. At over 5 metres in length, it matches the standard 5 Series sedan. The M alloys pair at the front and back measure 20 and 21 inches, respectively.

Similar to the 5 Series, M5’s cabin can be differentiated because of M-specific bits - leather flat-bottom steering wheel, hh ead-up display and sporty seats. Besides ambient lighting and a panoramic sunroof, BMW has partnered with Bowers and Wilkins for audio duties. Tailgate on this one is powered.

Under the hood lies a 4.4-litre twin-turbo V8 engine that is married to a plug-in hybrid setup, just like BMW XM sports utility vehicle. Out of the combined output, the ICE system alone is responsible for 80% performance - 577 bhp and 750 Nm. The electric motor and battery (22.1 kWh) adds 194 bhp and 280 Nm, taking the total to 717 bhp and 1,000 Nm. Electric-only range hovers around 70 kilometres and top speed is limited to 140 kilometres per hour.

Power is channeled to all four wheels via M Steptronic automatic gearbox, clocking the 0-100 kmph mark in 3.5 seconds (0.2 seconds slower than the outgoing model). Top speed is 250 km/h but you can take it up to 305 km/h by opting for the M Driver’s package.
