New Volvo XC60 and XC90 Get Major Electric Range Boost

New Volvo XC60 PHEV gets up to 200km of electric range. XC90 PHEV offers up to 160km of electric-only range. Both SUVs get larger batteries and more powerful electric motors.

Volvo has introduced new long-range plug-in hybrid versions of the XC60 and XC90 in Europe and the US. The two SUVs now get larger batteries and more powerful electric motors, bringing a major increase in their electric-only range.

The XC60 can travel up to 200km on electric power under the preliminary WLTP cycle, while the seven-seat XC90 gets up to 160km. Volvo says the new figures are more than two and a half times higher than those of the outgoing plug-in hybrid models.

Bigger battery brings more electric range

The biggest change comes from the updated hybrid setup. Both SUVs now use a larger floor-integrated battery along with a more powerful electric motor. The petrol engine continues to work as part of the plug-in hybrid system when more driving range is needed. This allows the XC60 and XC90 to cover longer distances without depending entirely on the battery. Volvo will continue to offer mild-hybrid versions of both SUVs alongside the new long-range PHEV models.

XC60 gets a fresh design

The XC60 receives more noticeable exterior changes as part of the update. The front end has been redesigned with a new grille, front bumper, bonnet and front wings. The SUV also gets revised wheels and updated Thor’s Hammer Matrix LED headlights. At the rear, Volvo has made changes to the tailgate, LED lights and bumper.

Inside, the XC60 gets a redesigned dashboard and door panels. Higher variants can be equipped with wood trim, Cardamom ventilated Nappa leather and improved interior lighting. The SUV also features an 11.2-inch central touchscreen running Volvo’s latest Car UX software.

XC90 retains its premium seven-seat layout

The XC90 gets the same new long-range PHEV technology while retaining its familiar seven-seat layout. The cabin continues with Volvo’s Scandinavian-inspired design, premium materials, wood trim and plenty of natural light.

An optional Bowers & Wilkins sound system is available, while Google Gemini has been added to the infotainment system. The AI assistant can respond to natural voice commands for navigation, destination searches and message management.

More technology and safety features

The updated XC60 also gets an upgraded sensor package with radars, cameras and other hardware. Its driver-assistance features include Lane Change Assist, automatic emergency braking and automatic emergency steering.

A 360-degree camera with a 3D view is also available. The SUV can even warn occupants about an approaching cyclist before a door is opened. Both SUVs will receive Google Gemini and over-the-air software updates. Volvo notes that equipment and connected features can vary by market and variant, with some functions requiring subscriptions or customer activation.

Up to 200km of electric driving

With the new battery and electric motor, the XC60 now leads the pair with up to 200km of claimed electric range. The XC90 can cover up to 160km on electric power under the preliminary WLTP cycle.
