Nissan Terrano PHEV has been spotted testing ahead of its expected 2027 launch. Rugged SUV design with a premium-looking cabin and ladder-frame platform. India launch is being considered, with a possible price of around Rs 40 lakh.
Nissan is working on a new Terrano SUV, and more details have now come to light. The upcoming SUV was first shown as the Terrano PHEV concept at the Beijing Auto Show earlier this year. A test version of the SUV has now been seen on the road, giving us a better idea of what the production model will look like.
The new Terrano is expected to launch in China in early 2027. It will be made there through Nissan’s joint venture with Dongfeng and could later be sold in markets across the Middle East, ASEAN and Latin America.
The production version of the Terrano looks quite close to the concept shown earlier. However, Nissan has removed some of the more extreme off-road equipment from the test car. The concept had bonnet-mounted fog lamps, roof-mounted lights, a large roof rack and chunky off-road tyres. These features are not seen on the test vehicle and could possibly be offered as accessories.
At the front, the Terrano gets slim pixel-style lighting elements along with a narrow closed grille. The bumper is large and has a skid plate and underbody protection. The SUV has a boxy design with an upright front, a clamshell bonnet and sharp body lines. It also gets large wheel arches, body cladding, large wheels, body-coloured door handles and rectangular ORVMs.
The blacked-out pillars give it a floating roof look, while the roof rails add to its SUV design. At the back, the Terrano gets a flat rear windscreen and tailgate. The tail lamps are placed vertically, while the chunky bumper adds to its rugged look. A spare wheel is also expected to be mounted at the rear.

The Terrano's cabin looks more premium than its rugged exterior. The test car gets a dual-tone tan and grey interior, with leatherette covering the seats, dashboard and door panels.
The centre console has a simple layout and includes an electronic gear selector, a rotary drive mode or terrain select dial, several switches and an electronic parking brake with auto hold. There is also a wide armrest and cup holders. Wireless phone charging is expected to be offered as well.
Other features are likely to include a large touchscreen infotainment system, digital instrument cluster and a steering wheel with mounted controls. A 360-degree camera could also be offered.
The new Terrano is expected to use a ladder-frame platform. It is based on the platform used by the Nissan Frontier Pro and Dongfeng Z9 pickup trucks. Nissan is said to be responsible for the chassis, main mechanical parts, safety systems and off-road hardware. The design has been developed by Nissan's design centre in China, with inputs from its Japan headquarters.
Dongfeng will provide the hybrid powertrain and other technology. The petrol engine for the regular ICE version has reportedly been developed by Mitsubishi. The PHEV version is expected to be the main focus in China. Other markets could get both petrol and PHEV versions.
The new Terrano could also make its way to India. Nissan is reportedly looking at products developed through its joint venture with Dongfeng for the Indian market, and the Terrano PHEV is believed to be one of the models being considered. Nissan is reportedly more interested in the PHEV version for India. If launched, it would enter the premium ladder-frame SUV segment and could compete with the Toyota Fortuner.
A price of around Rs 40 lakh (ex-showroom) is reportedly being considered. However, Nissan has not confirmed the price or the India launch yet. Local production could help Nissan keep the price in check. The company also has an annual production capacity reservation of around 2.5 lakh units at the Chennai plant, which has an overall capacity of around 5 lakh units.

The Nissan Terrano PHEV is expected to launch in China in early 2027. It could then be exported to several other international markets. For India, the SUV is still under consideration. Nissan has not confirmed whether it will be launched here. If it does arrive, the Terrano could become an important model in Nissan's plans to build a stronger SUV line-up in India.
