New Porsche EVs Could Get N e-shift Gearbox - Inspired by Hyundai

Porsche may add simulated gearbox to EVs. Inspired by Hyundai Ioniq 5 N tech. Focus on improving driving excitement.

Porsche is looking at new ways to make electric cars more engaging. The brand is now considering adding a simulated gearbox system to its future EVs, a feature that could bring back the feel of traditional gear shifts.

Inspired by Hyundai Ioniq 5 N

The idea comes after the impressive response to the Hyundai Ioniq 5 N.

This performance EV uses a system called N e-shift, which mimics an 8-speed gearbox. It creates artificial rev ranges and adjusts torque delivery to give a more familiar driving feel.

The experience is further enhanced by an artificial sound system, making the car feel closer to a petrol-powered model.

Porsche Impressed with the Experience

According to Andreas Preuninger, this technology can make EVs more fun to drive.

After testing the Ioniq 5 N, he described the simulated gearbox as very realistic and highlighted it as one of the most impressive aspects of the car.

He also noted that improving driver engagement remains a key focus for Porsche’s performance division.

Why It Matters for Porsche

Porsche is known for its driver-focused sports cars, and maintaining that feel in electric models is important for the brand.

A simulated gearbox, combined with Porsche’s precise steering and braking, could help deliver a more emotional driving experience even in EVs.

Future Models Could Get This Tech

Upcoming models like the next-generation Porsche 718 Boxster and Porsche 718 Cayman are expected to go electric.

These could be among the first Porsche EVs to feature this technology, although the company has not confirmed it yet.

Industry Moving in the Same Direction

Porsche is not alone in exploring this idea. The upcoming BMW M3 EV is also expected to use simulated gear shifts and artificial engine sounds. This shows that carmakers are trying to make EVs more exciting, not just efficient.
