The Suzuki Jimny is more of a lifestyle purchase than probably the most practical one. The compact, rugged 4x4 has become a beloved choice for a diverse set of customers in multiple international markets. However, the SUV has been discontinued in some countries due to strict emission norms coming into effect. This is why the automaker is now developing a pure electric version of the popular off-roader. We take a closer look.
The ICE-powered Jimny was pulled out of the European market for private buyers a couple of years back, currently it is only available as a commercial vehicle due to the high carbon footprint of the petrol motor.
Now, the Japanese automaker has announced that it is working on an EV version of the Jimny via a teaser image. This is in view of the company’s future plans for Electric Vehicles in Europe. First to be introduced as a 3-door electric version in Europe, India is expected to see the light of the 5-door Jimny EV thereafter.
Suzuki may face a few technical challenges when converting the Jimny to fit an electric powertrain. The SUV’s diminutive dimensions and ladder-frame chassis means that fitting in a battery pack would not be an easy task for the engineers. What the automaker might do is to install the battery pack into the chassis itself.
Powering the Jimny EV is likely to be a 60kWh battery pack. This is the same pack that was found on the recently showcased Maruti Suzuki eVX Concept during the 2023 Delhi Auto Expo. Featuring a dual motor setup, the SUV is expected to get a modified version in order to be able to fit onto the ladder on frame chassis instead of the bespoke skateboard platform on which it is based.
The Jimny EV is probably going to be launched around early or mid 2026. As mentioned before, Europe will be the first market where the electric 4x4 will be introduced in a 3-door form. Suzuki is also evaluating the 5-door model for the Indian market, and may launch it around 2027.
