Tata Motors has confirmed that the long-awaited Sierra SUV will go on sale in this calendar year. The new model will come in both ICE and EV form, with the electric model arriving first. It is expected that the new Sierra will share its battery packs and specifications with the newly launched Harrier.ev.
Speaking to media at the launch of Harrier EV, Tata officials confirmed that the Sierra EV and ICE will be launched before the end of this calendar year. The electric version will arrive first, followed by Sierra ICE. We expect the Sierra EV to launch during festive season, before Diwali. The ICE could arrive before the end of this year or early next year.
The Harrier.ev is currently the only Tata model to offer the AWD capabilities. The Hexa and Safari Storme were the last Tata SUVs to come with off-road credentials. The homegrown automaker has confirmed that the AWD set-up could be offered in other models going forward.
The Sierra EV could be the next Tata to feature the new QWD (Quad-Wheel Drive) or AWD system, which debuts in the Tata Harrier EV. It will come with dual-motor set-up for AWD capabilities.
The electric Sierra could get the same set-up as the new Harrier EV, featuring 65kWh battery with RWD set-up and 75kWh battery with RWD and QWD set-ups. In the QWD version, the front-axle-mounted electric motor produces 156bhp while the rear-axle mounted motor produces 235bhp. The SUV offers a maximum torque of up to 504Nm.
It offers a range of top to 622km in a single charge (ARAI Certified on MIDC cycle). Similar to the electric Harrier, the Tata Sierra EV could get multiple drive and terrain modes.
The Sierra ICE will be offered with petrol and diesel engine options. It will be powered by a new 1.5-litre, 4-cylinder, turbocharged petrol engine that produces 167bhp and 280Nm of torque. Transmission choices could include a 6-speed manual and a 7-speed DCT. The oil burner could get a 2.0L turbo unit or a 1.5L unit. Both manual and automatic gearbox choices will be on offer.
