Tata EV market share slips to 36 per cent in FY2026 Close fight for 2nd position between MG and Mahindra
The competitive landscape in the electric vehicle segment shifted significantly in FY2026. While Tata Motors remains the undisputed king, the gap is narrowing and global rivals scale up their dedicated Born Electric portfolios. Here is the list of top 10 EV passenger vehicle car manufacturers in FY2026.
Ranking |
Brand |
Sales FY2026 |
YoY Growth |
| 1 | Tata | 78811 | 35.9% |
| 2 | Mahindra | 53089 | 73.7% |
| 3 | JSW MG Motor | 42721 | 407% |
| 4 | Hyundai India | 5885 | 137.6% |
| 5 | BYD India | 5361 | 54% |
| 6 | Kia India | 3788 | 794.3% |
| 7 | BMW India | 3537 | 123.9% |
| 8 | VinFast India | 2390 | NA |
| 9 | Maruti Suzuki | 1416 | NA |
| 10 | Mercedes Benz | 1047 | -9.5% |
Tata remains the market leader, but its market share declined from 53 per cent to roughly around 39 per cent in FY2026. This is due to the massive influx of competition. Tata Motors EV sales consistently grew last year, but automakers like Mahindra and MG Motor India have significantly increased their sales by introducing new EVs. The Nexon EV and Punch EV were the brand’s top-sellers, which suggest that the demand for EVs are significant in the Rs 10 lakh - 20 lakh bracket.
MG secured a firm second place, thanks to the huge demand for Windsor EV. This is mainly due to the “Battery-as-a-Service” (BaaS) model introduced with the electric Windsor. The innovative pricing strategy lowered the entry barrier, allowing the brand to hold around 26 per cent of the market. This model is now followed by many automakers, including Maruti Suzuki.
Mahindra improved its EV sales significantly in FY2026. The brand’s XEV and BE range of SUVs have been receiving overwhelming response from car buyers. The company’s EV sales grew by good 400 per cent YoY in FY2026. The company currently has a market share of 21 per cent, and is set to challenge MG for the #2 spot in FY2027.
- Hyundai sold 5885 EVs in FY2026 and reported a YoY sales growth of 137.6 percent.
- BYD India is consistently improving its sales, and sold 5361 EVs last financial year with a 54% YoY growth.
- Kia improved its sales by massive 794.3% in FY2026, mainly due to the introduction of the Carens Clavis EV. The company sold a total of 3788 EVs in last financial year.
- BMW India has been the country’s largest luxury EV maker with 3537 units sold in FY2026, reporting a YoY sales growth of 123.9 per cent.
- The new entrant VinFast India received positive response from buyers with 2390 units sold in FY2026. Similarly, Maruti Suzuki sold 1416 units of the e Vitara in FY2026.
- Mercedes-Benz reported a YoY EV sales decline of 9.5 per cent with 1047 EVs sold in FY2026.
