Toyota Starts Testing Hilux EV Ahead Of Thailand Launch

Images have surfaced online of the Toyota Hilux EV pickup truck ahead of its 2025 launch in Thailand. The four-wheeler is in its last phase of testing before mass production begins. Toyota may consider exports at a later stage. Earlier reports had suggested that Toyota pulled the plug on the electric vehicle.

Notably, more than half of cars sold in Thailand are pickups. “Our intention is to be producing the Hilux Battery Electric Vehicle (BEV) over here,” said a senior Toyota official who did not reveal the production volume and pricing. Last year, Toyota sold over 30,000 hybrid cars occupying about an 11.5% chunk of its overall sales there.

The Hilux EV was first showcased in 2022 as the Hilux Revo BEV concept. Official power and battery specifications and range are yet to be disclosed by the Japanese car brand. According to our estimates, the Hilux EV will get a four-wheel drive system as standard with batteries on each of the two axles. Rivals of Toyota’s upcoming EV will include the Isuzu D-Max EV boasting 177 horsepower and 325 Newton metres of torque from a 66.9 kWh cell pack.

Toyota sells the Hilux diesel in India at a starting price of Rs. 30.40 lakh, with the top-model priced at Rs. 37.90 lakh, ex-showroom.
