The electric vehicle (EV) market is gradually picking up in India. OEMs such as Hyundai, Tata, Mahindra, Kia and MG are offering multiple electric models across different price range while expanding their charging infrastructure. EV adoption has further been boosted by government’s incentives.
While compact and midsize electric SUVs are quite popular among buyers, the three-row electric SUVs are also gaining traction. As we stepped into 2025, there will at least four major 7-seater electric cars will make their debut including MG M9, Kia Carens EV, Mahindra XEV 7e and Tata Safari EV. Here’s a brief of these upcoming 7-seater electric cars.
MG M9, which is retailed as the Maxus Mifa 9 in global markets, is set to hit Indian roads in March, 2025. Pre-bookings for this luxury electric MPV are already underway nationwide. The M9 will be the brand’s second offering to be retailed exclusively through the MG Select premium showrooms. While its prices will be revealed next month, it’s expected to cost around Rs 65 lakh. The MG M9 recently made its India debut at the 2025 Bharat Mobility Show. The showcased model features a 90kWh lithium battery pack paired to a front axle-mounted electric motor and FWD (front-wheel drive) system. This electric MPV is claimed to offer a WLTP range of 430km on a single charge.
Measuring 5.2 metres in length, the MG M9 comes with two sunroofs – a single-pane for the front and a dual-pane for the rear. Its offers ample cabin space with two seating configuration options – 7 and 8-seats. Some of its key features are powered front and rear seats with ventilation, heating, and massage functions, rear entertainment screens, fold-out ottoman seats, rear sliding doors, and more.
The Kia Carens is one of the most practical and affordable MPVs we have in India. In 2025, the South Korean automaker will give it a midlife update. Reports suggest that the updated Kia Carens might also get the electric powertrain with the facelift. The MPV’s electric iteration will underpin the same platform as its ICE counterpart along with sharing the body shell, design elements and features. Visually, the Kia Carens EV will look slightly different from the front end featuring a closed-off grille as we have seen in the EV9. A few design changes will also be made at the rear profile.
The spy images reveal that the Kia Carens EV will miss out on the exhaust pipe and have different suspension setup than the ICE-powered Carens. If reports are to be believed, Kia might use the 42kWh battery pack with a single 135bhp, electric motor, which powers the Hyundai Creta Electric. This setup offers a claimed ARAI-certified range of 390km.
The Mahindra XEV 7e, the electric version of the XUV700, will arrive towards the end of 2025 with an expected starting price of Rs 20.9 lakh. Prior to its official debut, the images of the production-ready version have leaked on the web revealing some interesting details. The XEV 7e shares a strong resemblance with its ICE counterpart including the LED taillamps, window lines and more. However, the front profile is inspired by the XEV 9e with elements such as split headlamp setup and inverted L-shaped connected LED DRLs. It has aero-optimized alloy wheels instead of the regular ones.
Inside, the new Mahindra electric SUV will have black and white theme with white seat upholstery. It’s likely to come with triple screen setup, two-spoke steering wheel with illuminated logo, powered and ventilated front seats with memory function, a premium sound system, a panoramic sunroof, etc.
Powertrain details of this upcoming 7-seater electric car are yet to be revealed. Though, it’s expected to share battery packs with the XEV 9e, which is available with the 59kWh and 79kWh options. While the smaller battery delivers a claimed MIDC range of 542km, the bigger battery pack promises 656km.
Tata Motors showcased the Safari EV and Harrier EV as Stealth Editions at the 2025 Bharat Mobility Show. Both models were pained in a new Matte Black colour. The Tata Safari EV features blacked out front grille, bumper and air dam along with the connected LED lighting elements. The SUV has all black cabin theme with dashboard design similar to its ICE counterpart. The Safari EV Stealth Edition offers features such as a wireless phone charger, a 12.3-inch touchscreen infotainment system, dual zone AC, a panoramic sunroof, a 360 degree camera, 7 airbags, Level 2 ADAS tech and more.
There is no word on its battery pack capacity and range. However, it’s expected that the Tata Safari EV might share its powertrain with the Harrer EV. The latter is likely to be offered with a 60kWh battery pack, offering a range of around 500km on a full charge. The SUV might get an electric motor on each axle along with the AWD (all-wheel drive) configuration.
