Mercedes Benz recently unveiled the updated G-Class in India with two new variants, with the Adventure Edition being an India-specific variant. Now, the latest reports have revealed that the automaker has started work on a mid-life facelift for the SUV. It will see the G-Class getting a cosmetic refresh, new powertrain options, and an updated feature list. We take a closer look.
While the test mules spotted in the spy shots are clad in heavy camouflage, we expect the 2024 G-Class facelift to get some exterior design changes. The front end will likely get a new grille and bumper design as well as tweaked headlights and LED DRL signature. Moving to the side, the G-Class profile will remain fairly similar to the current model but may get a new alloy wheel design to freshen it up. At the rear, the SUV will feature new LED taillights and a reprofiled bumper.
Inside, Mercedes will likely update the G-Class’ interior to be in line with other new models like the S-Class and E-Class in its lineup. Notable features will include a portrait-oriented MBUX infotainment system, a larger digital instrument cluster, a steering wheel with Haptic Touch controls, and updated ADAS features. The SUV will also probably replace the current rotary dial on the centre console with a touchscreen interface.
With the G-Class facelift, Mercedes may discontinue the diesel powertrain from the lineup, making it a petrol-only SUV. The brand has already discontinued the G500 V8 which will be replaced by a twin-turbo V6 with mild-hybrid support. While the V8 will continue in the G63, Mercedes may also introduce a pure-electric variant as the automaker had already revealed a EV concept version of the SUV last year. It will likely be called the EQG.
Mercedes will likely unveil the facelifted G-Class globally before the end of 2023. It will likely go on sale early next year. Since the brand recently updated the SUV here, the India debut of the new G-Class may be some time away, probably around 2025 at the earliest.
