Top 4 New Plug-in Hybrids Coming Soon

Mercedes S-Class PHEV launches on June 15. BYD Seal U and MG 520 are coming later this year. More plug-in hybrid options are heading to India.

Plug-in hybrid vehicles (PHEVs) are slowly making their way into the Indian market. Unlike regular hybrids, they can run on electric power for longer distances and can also be charged using an external charger. At the same time, they have a petrol engine for longer journeys, so drivers don't have to depend only on charging stations.

Over the next few months, four new plug-in hybrid models are expected to arrive in India. Here's a quick look at them.

1. Mercedes-Benz S-Class Plug-in Hybrid

Mercedes-Benz will launch the updated S-Class in India on June 15, and one of the biggest highlights will be the S 450 e plug-in hybrid. The luxury sedan combines a 3.0-litre turbo-petrol engine with an electric motor, producing a total of 429 hp and 680 Nm of torque. It also gets a 21.96 kWh battery pack and offers a claimed electric-only driving range of up to 109 km.

2. Jetour Traveller C-DM

JSW Auto is expected to enter the Indian market with a rebadged version of the Jetour Traveller C-DM. The SUV uses a 1.5-litre turbo-petrol engine along with multiple electric motors, depending on the variant. Internationally, it is offered with battery packs of up to 43.24 kWh and can deliver an electric-only range of up to 162 km. The India-spec model is expected to rival premium SUVs like the Toyota Fortuner.

3. MG 520

JSW MG Motor is also preparing a new three-row SUV called the MG 520. The plug-in hybrid version is expected to use a 1.5-litre petrol engine paired with an electric motor and a 20.5 kWh battery pack. It can travel up to 125 km in electric mode, according to the CLTC test cycle. The SUV is expected to arrive around October and could take on models like the Tata Safari and Mahindra XUV700.

4. BYD Seal U

BYD has confirmed that the Seal U will be launched in India later this year. It will be the company's first plug-in hybrid model in the country and will feature BYD's DM-i hybrid technology. The SUV is expected to use a 1.5-litre turbo-petrol engine, a single electric motor, and an 18.3 kWh battery pack. BYD claims an electric-only range of up to 126 km for this version.
