BMW will launch the long-wheelbase 5 Series sedan in India on July 24. The Mercedes E-Class LWB rival will mark its limousine format debut upon launch here. It will be BMW’s second car with an extended wheelbase after the very successful 3 Series Gran Limousine.
Being an LWB vehicle, the eight-generation car currently on sale in China is longer (5,175 millimetres) than its standard sibling by 145 mm, translating to an additional 110 mm for the wheelbase. Height and width dimensions measure 1,520 mm and 1,900 mm, respectively. The India-spec car is expected to get higher ground clearance with modifications in line with a right-hand driven setup, Autocar stated.
The kidney-shaped grille is retained and is illuminated besides the overall silhouette of the luxury four-wheeler. In China, the 5-Series LWB gets a ‘5’ inscripted on the C-pillar which glows in white.
Stepping in, BMW offers a 14.9-inch touchscreen infotainment system positioned in the centre besides a 12.3-inch LCD instrument cluster. Behind, there’s a 31.1-inch 8K-resolution display mounted on the headliner. Other bits include reclining rear seats, four-zone AC and quilted upholstery.
From 520 Li to 520d Ld, cubic capacity is limited to 2 litres with a mild-hybrid system and paired to an 8-speed automatic transmission. The electrified i5 may come with 81.2kWh battery pack boasting a maximum range of 582 kilometres.
BMW will aggressively price the ICE 5 Series LWB cars in the Rs.70 lakh - Rs. 80 lakh bracket to compete with its Mereceds counterpart. On the contrary, i5 will be priced from Rs. 90 lakh with no direct competitors.
