Delhi Introduces 45-Day Digital Traffic Challan System

Delhi launches 45-day digital traffic challan system for all vehicle owners. Non-payment may restrict vehicle-related services, including taxes and registration. Online disputes allowed, 50% upfront required if case goes to court.

Delhi is set to implement a fully digital traffic challan system with a strict 45-day timeline for settling or disputing fines.

The move aims to make traffic enforcement more efficient, transparent, and accountable. Drivers who fail to respond within the timeline may face restrictions on essential vehicle-related services.

Challans Issued to Registered Vehicle Owners

Under the new rules, e-challans will be issued in the name of the registered vehicle owner. Drivers will have 45 days to either accept the fine or challenge it online.

Disputes can be raised online at no extra cost. If the matter goes to court, authorities require a 50 percent upfront payment of the fine before proceedings begin. Failing to respond within the stipulated time will automatically be considered acceptance of the challan.

Quick Delivery of E-Challans

Traffic police or authorised officers will continue issuing both physical and electronic challans. E-challans will be sent to the violator’s registered phone number within three days, while a physical notice will follow in 15 days.

After the 45-day period, authorities will issue daily electronic reminders to ensure timely action.

Unpaid Fines Can Affect Vehicle Services

Challans that remain unpaid will flag the vehicle as “not to be transacted” on the official portal.

This can block all vehicle-related services, including tax payments, registration requests, and driving license services. Authorities are also empowered to impound vehicles if directed by a court order.
