Freelander SUV to return after nearly a decade First electrified model debut on March 31 China launch confirmed, global entry possible
The iconic Freelander name is making a comeback. Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) has partnered with Chinese automaker Chery to bring back the Freelander as a new range of electrified SUVs.
The first model under this new line-up will be officially unveiled on March 31, 2026.
The upcoming Freelander SUVs will be positioned differently from JLR’s existing brands like Range Rover, Defender, Discovery, and Jaguar.
Instead of being part of the company’s luxury “House of Brands” strategy, Freelander will be sold as a separate model line. Sales and distribution will be handled through Chery’s dealership network, especially in China.

According to JLR China President Qing Pan, the new Freelander range will initially be launched in China.
However, there is potential for expansion into global markets in the future, depending on demand and market response.
The SUVs will be manufactured at the Chery-JLR joint venture facility in China.
The new Freelander range is expected to replace locally produced models such as the Discovery Sport and Range Rover Evoque in China.
Both these SUVs are likely to be discontinued in the Chinese market later this year.
The upcoming Freelander SUVs will be based on a platform developed by Chery. Reports suggest it could be the same architecture used in models like the Jaecoo 7.
The first model is expected to be a plug-in hybrid SUV, combining fuel efficiency with electric driving capability.
In terms of design, teaser images hint at a modern SUV with a coupe-like shape and a distinctive front lighting setup.

While Chery will handle the platform, JLR will play a key role in design and positioning.
The new models will take inspiration from the original Freelander, which was first introduced in 1997. It was known for pioneering the compact premium SUV segment and was discontinued in 2015.
The upcoming version aims to bring back that legacy with a modern, tech-focused approach tailored for today’s buyers.
