Land Rover is all set to launch a new electric SUV called the ‘Defender Sport’, also known as the ‘Baby Defender’. This compact electric 4×4 is expected to go on sale in 2027 and will be part of Land Rover’s plan to grow its electric vehicle range.
The Baby Defender has been in the news for a while, and now it has been seen on road tests for the first time.
Here’s a look at its key features and what to expect.
The upcoming Land Rover Baby Defender, also expected to be called the Defender Sport, is likely to measure around 4.6 meters in length, 2 meters in width, and 1.8 meters in height.
While smaller than the standard Defender, these dimensions still give it a bold and commanding road presence.

Just like its larger sibling, the Baby Defender carries a boxy, rugged design with bold proportions. Spy shots reveal a flat, upright nose, emphasizing its tough off-road character.
While many finer details remain hidden under camouflage, the SUV is expected to feature rectangular LED headlights and a minimalist grille, in line with the Defender’s design language.
Other key exterior highlights include:
Chunky front and rear bumpers
Thick body cladding for a rugged look
Large, blacked-out alloy wheels
Flush-fitting door handles for a sleek profile
The upcoming Land Rover Baby Defender will be built on the brand-new EMA (Electric Modular Architecture) platform, developed exclusively for electric vehicles. This advanced platform will also underpin the next-generation models of the Range Rover Evoque, Range Rover Velar, and Land Rover Discovery Sport.
In terms of powertrain, the EMA platform is designed to support 800V electrical architecture, allowing for ultra-fast charging capabilities. While exact charging times haven’t been revealed, they are expected to meet or exceed current industry standards.
The battery packs for the Baby Defender will be produced at Tata’s new UK-based battery plant, owned by JLR.
Seeing the growing demand for hybrid cars, popular mass-market car manufacturers like Kia, Hyundai, Mahindra and Renault are planning to launch hybrid SUVs in India.
