Hyundai teases Ioniq 2, its smallest EV, ahead of IAA Mobility Show 2025 Compact electric hatchback expected to launch globally in the first half of 2026 India launch possible, positioned above Inster EV and rivalling subcompact EVs like Renault 5 E-Tech
Hyundai has revealed the first teaser images of its upcoming baby EV, expected to be named the Ioniq 2. The car is set to make its global debut at the IAA Mobility Show 2025 in Munich, Germany, scheduled from September 9 to 14. The concept reflects Hyundai’s vision for next-generation mobility solutions with a focus on compact, affordable electric vehicles.
The teaser images show a sporty and futuristic design with smooth, curvy body panels. The concept features a mesh-pattern design on the front and rear bumpers, a sloping bonnet with sharp grooves, and flared wheel arches. The roofline gently slopes into the rear windshield, ending in a distinctive ducktail spoiler. Earlier test mules revealed that the production model could feature sleek LED headlamps, DRLs, and full-width LED bars, similar to those on the facelifted Hyundai Ioniq 6 sedan.
Hyundai Ioniq 2 is expected to use the E-GMP architecture, which is already employed in Kia EV2 and EV3 crossover SUVs. It is likely to be powered by a single electric motor generating around 150 kW or 204 PS, paired with a 58.3 kWh battery pack. This setup could give the Ioniq 2 an estimated range of about 430 km on the WLTP cycle.
If launched, the Ioniq 2 will be the smallest member of Hyundai’s Ioniq family, positioned above the Inster EV. It will appeal to buyers looking for an electric alternative to Hyundai’s i20 hatchback and Bayon crossover. Globally, the Ioniq 2 is expected to compete with subcompact electric hatchbacks such as the Nissan Micra EV, Renault 5 E-Tech, Citroen e-C3, Opel Corsa Electric, Peugeot e-208, and BYD Dolphin.
The production version of the Hyundai Ioniq 2 could be launched in the first half of 2026. While there is no official confirmation regarding an India launch, the growing demand for small EVs suggests it could make its way to the country in the future. Hyundai is already preparing the Inster EV for the Indian market, which will be manufactured at the Sriperumbudur plant in Tamil Nadu.
