Hyundai SUVs, Sedans To Get Hybrid Powertrains In India

Hyundai Motor India is planning to introduce hybrid vehicles in the Indian market in the next 3 years. The hybrid cars will be the part of the brand's electrified future in India. Addressing a town hall, Euisun Chung, the executive chairman of Hyundai Motor Group, said that the hybrids will be an important part of its portfolio in India, along with electric vehicles.

Hyundai's midsize SUVs and sedan including the Creta, Alcazar, Verna and the Tucson are likely to come with hybrid powertrains in the coming years. Not just Hyundai, Kia India is also planning to introduce hybrid vehicles in India. While most of the brands have already discontinued diesels, Hyundai is still offering diesel powered vehicles in India. However, the cost of diesel engines will significantly increase post BS6 Phase II emission norms which will come into effect post 2027. Hyundai believes that hybrids could be a better replacement for the diesel-powered vehicles in India.

Hyundai Creta Hybrid

Hyundai plans to invest Rs 33,000 crore in the coming decade in the country. The company is aiming to have a production capacity of 1.5 million vehicles before the end of this decade. Hyundai will have its first locally developed EV, based on the Creta, in the first half of 2025. Moreover, a mass market EV is also under development which is scheduled to be launched in 2026-27. In order to achieve competitive pricing, Hyundai has partnered with the battery maker Exide to localise cells.
