Major Indian automakers, such as Tata and Mahindra, have long gone riding the EV wave, but Maruti Suzuki has not yet offered an electric vehicle. After a concept showcased at the 2023 Auto Expo and again at the Bharat Mobility Expo most recently, Suzuki will ride the EV wave for the first time with the eVX, an electric mid-sized SUV. This was a big stride in Maruti Suzuki's journey towards sustainable mobility in India. By the end of the financial year 2024-25, it will start manufacturing electric cars at its Gujarat plant, according to a report. To note, Suzuki will first export the electric SUV to international markets such as Europe.
A standout feature of the eVX is its long driving range. The vehicle is built on a ground-up, all-electric platform that promises to change the future of electric vehicles in the country. A powerful 60kWh battery pack promises to provide up to 550 km of driving range. With such a remarkable range, it will allow drivers to embark on longer journeys without worrying about range anxiety.
The eVX's progressively curvaceous SUV design is far from the design of traditional SUVs. As an 'Emotional Versatile Cruiser', the eVX's length, breadth and height dimensions stand at 4,300 mm, 1,800mm and 1,600mm, respectively, sitting over a dedicated EV platform that has unmatched functionality and safety.
Addressing the five-seater SUV's global premiere earlier, Mr Toshihiro Suzuki, Representative Director and President of Suzuki Motor Corporation, said he was excited over the concept eVX and that Suzuki was committed to reducing global warming. He announced Suzuki Motor Corporation's monumental ₹100 billion investment towards the production of battery electric vehicles and cells in India.
Another detail for you is that this will also create a platform for a Toyota model, which has been showcased as the 'Toyota Urban SUV Concept'. What this joint project will do is further underscore Maruti Suzuki's efforts in driving innovation within the EV space through partnership.
Even though the company has belatedly entered the EV market, the eVX is set to challenge upcoming cars such as the Kia Carens EV, Hyundai Creta EV and the Mahindra XUV e8. Going by what Maruti Suzuki engineers intend to deliver, the eVX is set to change the definition of what an EV is.
